Very good introduction for practitioner.

The book of Shipley provides an easy to read introduction in the field of structural equations and causal inference from experimental data. Most concepts are very well explained and examples are provided to see how to apply the concepts practically. Without any reservation I recommend it to none experts in this field who want to learn the intermediate basics directly applicable to own problems, e.g., for biologists.

However, for people trained in more theoretical fields, e.g., computer science, the thorough verbal explanations of mathematical formular (which are provided) is a little tiring after the first 100 pages, because the relative simple formulas can easily be interpreted. Instead, I wished the book would provide more alternative approaches in form of statistical test to test for causality. For this reason, I would recommend not to rewrite the complete book, but only include one additional chapter written in a more technical style. Then it would be close to perfect.

Finally, I want to remark, that the historical notes given throughout the book are not only very intesting but also inspiring, because they remind not to oversee mathematical developments in the none mathematical literature. SEM is certainly a good example.

To summarize, this is really a decent book!

Path analysis and structural equation modeling

This is an excellent guidebook to path analysis and structural equations for biologists. The text is very readable (and even amusing in spots). There is interesting background on the development of path analysis and SEM, as well as thoughtful explanations of how these analyses can link hypotheses of causality to probability theory. New techniques for model testing are introduced that may add additional utility to the statistical method. I found it to be a thoughtful and thorough introduction to a potentially powerful new technique in biology and ecology.

Great methods!

This book is one of the best in the subject and its approaches to causality are very straight forward, and uses interesting algorithms. This book is very clear, and the authors takes you stsep by step in order to perform causal analysis. I used this books in a course, and I really enjoyed its simplicity.

About the Author
Duran Leblebici is Professor Emeritus of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Istanbul Technical University (ITU). He has been teaching a range of undergraduate and graduate courses, from device electronics and fabrication to integrated electronic circuits and RF IC design, for over 40 years. He is the author of three textbooks in the field of electronics. He also established the first microelectronics laboratory in Turkey in 1975 and the first VLSI Design House in 1991. He received the Distinguished Service Award of the Turkish Scientific and Technological Research Council (TUBITAK) in 1992, in recognition of his services to microelectronics education.

Yusuf Leblebici is Director and Chair Professor of the Microelectronic Systems Laboratory at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL). He has previously worked as a faculty member at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, at Istanbul Technical University, and at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), where he established and directed the VLSI Design Laboratory, and also served as a project director at the New England Center for Analog and Mixed-Signal IC Design. He is a co-author of more than 150 scientific articles and 3 textbooks.

About the Author
Maksim Skorobogatiy is Professor and Canada Research Chair in Photonic Crystals at the Department of Engineering Physics at École Polytechnique de Montréal, Canada. In 2005 he was awarded a fellowship from the Japanese Society for Promotion of Science, and he is a member of the Optical Society of America.

Jianke Yang is Professor of Applied Mathematics at the University of Vermont, USA. He is a member of the Optical Society of America and the Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics.

Excellent approach in order to learn the basics of Photonic Crystal

As part of graduate courses, I was given the task to read this book written by professor Skorobogatiy. I had no prior knowledge of Photonic Crystals (PCs) before hand although I am a physicist by formation. The book is extremely well written and provides the necessary mathematical steps to properly understand the material. Be aware that this book is note "light" reading but with some efforts on the reader's part, it provides you the necessary foundation to properly understand the waveguiding mechanisms in PCs.

I strongly recommend going through the exercises at the end of each chapters as it clarifies a lot of concepts. The provided solutions to the problems give you just enough details to guide you in the derivation of the solutions. I also recommend downloading the MATLAB software found in Professor Skorobogatiy. It is quite easy to extend in order to consider different problems.

I fully recommend this book to anybody who is serious about learning the fundamentals of Photonic Crystals. I also believe that Dr. Skorobogatiy's book and the book "Photonic Crystals: Molding the Flow of Light " (SE) by John D. Joannopoulos (Author), Steven G. Johnson, et al. complement each other very well.

To resume, it is a must have book.

Cutting-edge Contribution to Poverty and Affluence Literature

In this anthology Deen Chatterjee brings together the foremost intellectuals in the field of political philosophy to explore how the role of citizenship and nationality is and/or ought to shape the responsibilities of the affluent to the global poor. In his illuminating introduction Chatterjee introduces the question of whether and how intensified global social and economic arrangements contribute to perpetuating prevailing economic inequities and how they might be shifted toward more just outcomes through individual and collective action. The contributors advance robust theories that extend the bounds of morality and the obligations of the affluent to the global poor (as is most notably articulated by Peter Singer in the opening chapter) and on the other end, that limit stringent moral boundaries to fellow citizens but leave room for acts of beneficence toward the global poor.
In a world where tens of thousands of people die per day due to poverty the questions raised and answers offered to poverty alleviation in Chatterjee's cutting-edge anthology cannot and should not be ignored.

Denis J. Murphy is Professor of Biotechnology at the University of Glamorgan, UK. His career in plant biotechnology research spans three decades, including ten years on the management team of the John Innes Centre, arguably Europe's premier research centre in plant science. He is currently highly involved with the ongoing debate on genetically modified food and crops, both locally and internationally, providing expertise and advice to numerous organisations and government agencies, as well as engaging with the general public and the media.
