Alex Kozulin is Research Director of The International Center for the Enhancement of Learning Potential in Jerusalem, Israel, and teaches at Tel Aviv University and Hebrew University. A must for professionally-trained teachers

After 30 years of teaching, I was looking for a book that would help me evaluate my teaching experiences as well as give me some new perspectives and ideas. This excellent collection of the findings of recent research based on Vygotsky's brilliant work has provided me with both great insight and appreciation of my teaching career as well as the verification of my teaching instincts and the determination to follow through on what I feel are the best methods to use when teaching in today's multi-cultural learning environments.

Featured in the bestseller early-childhood reference of 2009, "Nurtureshock"

I just finished reading, "Nurtureshock" about the shocking results in the field of child development research and science. The authors discussed the use of the "scaffolding techniques" developed by the renowned educational theorist Leonid Vygotsky. This constructivist method (if it is implemented properly) does work and the kids are learning. The children are learning by leaps and bounds! The science proves it! If you are involved in the field of early childhood education (or if you're a concerned parent), you really should read this book.

This is a solid scholarly work in assessing the China question of "China threat". This book traces the ancient to modern in theory and practice of defense and offense in the Tao of yin and Yang. There is no difference between US and China as the American symbol of eagle holding arrows and olive branch. It is interesting the author mentioned Zhang He, the Ming Dynasty navigator who explored the western oceans in seven trips without establishing colonies and enslavement. Otherwise, we would have New Beijing instead of New York. American history documented and justified the Civil War in bringing United States together to go forward. Is it an universal truth or just American uniqueness?
Sun Tze in his famous Art of War stated that military force is the lowest strategy in contrast to the highest of negotiation and diplomacy in preventing fighting! This is the Chinese truth. However, in this book, the author chose not to take the history of 19th Century of being the "Sick Man of East Asia", the victim of Imperialism and Colonialism. The defeat and humiliation motivated Dr Sun in overthrowing the corrupt Manchus Dynasty and established a modern Chinese Republic with Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek in uniting the country and defending the invasion of Japanese. China being the important Ally, did not gain back the disputed Islands. US stated to defend Japan under treaty obligations should China take move in the Island. Is it yin and yang that all of a sudden, Japan, the aggressor of WW II who bombed Pearl Harbor became Uncle Sam's comrade in arm? It was the comrade in arm between China and US in defeating Japan with her unconditional surrender!
This is a good book in understanding the past and in evaluating the current international status and development of war and peace, yin and yang, pacific and bellicose. This is a good guide that motivates reader to explore more.

Introduction to the erosion of trust

As other authors have pointed out, the American society and those in other countries are less "connected" than ever before. Indeed, there is ample evidence that people trust their government, business leaders, professionals, and each other less.
This collection of five lectures explores how the phenomenon happens and what can be done to avert the current trend. In particular, the author argued that many current meausres of improving trust, such as increasing transparency and accountability of public and private sectors, usually miss the main point and may do more harm than good.
Some of her suggested solutions are very noble indeed. They can nevertheless be implemented if only more people understand the importance of trust as a fundamental farbic in demoracy, business, and each individual's well-being. The book serves as a very elementary introduction to such an issue.

Those who are interested in the application of plasma, this book may be helpful.
But if a reader prefers fundamental plasma physics, it is better to start some other books before reading this one.

About the Author
Peter Dahlgren is Professor of Media and Communication Studies at Lund University, Sweden. He has also taught at Stockholm University, as well as Queens College and Fordham University in New York City, and has been a visiting scholar at several other universities. He is the author of many articles and author or editor of several books, including Television and the Public Sphere (1995) and Young Citizens and New Media: Learning for Democratic Participation (2007).

Mercifully short and relatively straightforward

The ideas in this book are actually quite simple and practical-oriented, although they might not be applicable in many actual real-life teaching contexts.

I was relieved to find that, unlike most TESOL textbooks, the author and publisher do not afflict the reader with a massive amount of padding or filler in order to create a thicker end product that they can charge a higher price for. Much gratitude!

This study of late medieval Sicily develops a critique of theories of dependence through trade, and a new interpretation of the late medieval economy. It thus addresses current debates on the origins of modern Italian economic dualism, and on the transition from feudalism to capitalism in early modern Europe. Dr Epstein argues that economic development during this period was shaped largely by regional political and institutional structures which regulated access to markets. Following the Black Death, many institutional and social constraints on commercialization were relaxed throughout western Europe as a result of social conflict and demographic change. Peasants became more commercialized; economic growth occurred through regional integration and specialization. The Sicilian economy also expanded and became increasingly export-oriented. although only a small proportion of its output was shipped abroad before 1500. Late medieval Sicily is thus shown to have been neither underdeveloped nor dependent on foreign manufactures and trade.

An excellent general introduction to mineralogy

Having been wowed by DK Publishing's gorgeous "Rock and Gem", I was looking for a more technical volume that would cover the basics of mineralogy. The intended audience for this book is likely 2nd and 3rd year undergraduates in an earth sciences program. I compared this book with several others, particularly Nesse's "Introduction to Mineralogy" and Klein's "Manual of Mineral Science", which are the two most commonly used mineralogy textbooks. This volume covers the same basic content as those two, but has a more concise, clear writing style and includes more material on the applied aspects of mineralogy (ore deposits, gems, minerals in human health, etc.). I was pleased with my choice - this book makes some difficult concepts and technical material (e.g. crystal symmetry) understandable for the layperson with a decent knowledge of basic math, chemistry, and physics. It is also excellent in its descriptions of the analytical tools that professional mineralogists use to study crystal structure and advance our understanding of mineralogy. Recommended.

About the Author
Mark A. Bedau is Professor of Philosophy and Humanities at Reed College, Oregon and a regular Visiting Professor at the European School of Molecular Medicine, in Milan, Italy. He is an internationally recognized leader in the philosophical and scientific study of living systems and has published and lectured extensively on issues concerning emergence, evolution, life, mind, and the social and ethical implications of creating life from nonliving materials.

Carol E. Cleland is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Colorado (Boulder). She is a central figure in the emerging science of astrobiology and has published in major science as well as philosophy journals. Her research focuses on issues in scientific methodology, historical science (especially earth and planetary science), biology (especially microbiology, origins of life, the nature of life, and astrobiology), and the theory of computation.

A collection of writings on the philosophy of biology

This book is a real gem. A number of different viewpoints on the origin and essence of life are presented, all of which are thought-provoking and generally accessible. The hardest read was the extract from Kant's "Critique of the teleological power of judgement" but I can see the reasons for including this piece amongst the others. The origins and definition of life are two questions that I have been reading around for a while, this book is definitely one of the highlights of my collection. I would see this book sitting on the bookshelf of beginners and scholars alike.

Broken into 4 sections:

I. Classical Discussions of life

II. The Origin and extent of Natural Life

III. Artificial Life and Synthetic Biology

IV. Defining and Explaining Life

this book will challenge and broaden your perceptions on the nature of life. You won't find many arguments for vitalism in here, the vast majority of the essays assume that life is a material phenomenon, accessible to scientific investigation, but the complexities possible within this stricture are fully explored. Many of the big names from the discipline of biology have contributed, and each section begins with a thoughtful introduction. The references and bibliography are impeccable.
