This book starts with more literature/cultural references for the earlier English segment, and grows more black-letter law-based as it moves into the more recent (19th century), more US-based segment. I found it an informative introduction to the title's topics.

About the Author
Beverly Baines is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Law at Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada where she originated the Law Gender Equality and Feminist Jurisprudence courses. Her research interests include issues in constitutional law, feminist legal theory, anti-discrimination law, multiculturalism, and equality rights. She has contributed chapters to Conversation Among Friends - Entre Amies: Women and Constitutional Reform, Changing Patterns: Women in Canada, and Women and the Constitution, and has written articles for major Canadian and international journals.

Ruth Rubio-Marin is Associate Professor of Constitutional Law at the University of Seville, Spain. She is author of Immigration as a Democratic Challenge: Citizenship and Inclusion in Germany and the United States and of articles on language rights, nationality, immigration and gender in law. She has taught at several North American academic institutions including Princeton University and Columbia Law School and is currently a member of the Hauser Global Law School Program at New York University.

Donald McRobbie is Head of Radiological & MR Physics and Senior Lecturer in the Radiological Sciences Unit at Charing Cross Hospital, London.

Elizabeth Moore is Principal MR Physicist in the Lysholm Radiological Department of the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, in London.

Martin Graves is Principal Clinical Scientist in MRI at Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge, and his research interests are in cardiovascular and abdominal MR imaging.

Martin Prince is Chief of MRI at New York Hospital and Professor of Radiology at Weill Medical College of Cornell University. He is also Associate Editor of Radiology for Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

Picture to Proton, The Right Way Round

Anyone who has tried to teach MR to non-physicists is used to two dilemas.
How do you keep a student interested while you lay the "necessary groundwork" to explain MRI ?
How do you give craft an intuitive explanation without oversimplifications that can be hard to explain away later?
These authors find a way. They present MR in the way we experience it, starting with the questions everyone faces first about images, contrast resolutionm, and using those questions to guide a path to the mechanisms of image production, signal generation and manipulation.
The easy flowing style underlines the skill and credibility of the authors, while side boxes offer historical perspectives and deeper treatment of key topics.
IMHO, This the perfect first text, and a great desk reference for all MR users.

Good Basics

This book is excellent for people who have clinical experience and would like to delve more deeply into the physical world of MRI. The explanations are simple, yet still effective without obscuring the underlying physics. Basic relationships between fundamental quantities that govern image formation/quality are also made clear. However, this book is not for advanced MR students looking for theoretical formulations.

A good intro for fMRI folks, too

I had a biochemistry lecturer once who challenged the biologists in the audience on how it was they thought they could get away with only minimal understanding of chemistry when they were learning biochemistry. "After all," he told the class, "the longest part of the word is 'chemistry.'" He went on to demand that biochemistry be taught as rigorously as any other branch of chemistry; no short cuts. And so it is, I think, for functional MRI. FMRI depends not insignificantly on MRI to function. Furthermore, modern fMRI experiments can depend quite heavily on ancillary scan types, such as those used for voxel-based morphometry, diffusion imaging/tractography, perfusion imaging and so on. BOLD isn't all there is!

If you are planning on using fMRI in any serious manner for your research then I would suggest that you'd better get a jolly good grounding in MRI, too, or you can expect to struggle (and possibly have to rely on people like me to get your experiments done). But you may need a gentle place to start your (re)education. MRI: From Picture to Proton is as good a place as any to start. It is readable should you want to try learning on your own, or it could easily form a core text for an intro class (or discussion group) on MRI. It's accurate and contains a lot of useful advanced material in the many 'aside' boxes. Overall, it's a solid text to have on your desk for quick reference, and along with the fMRI books by Buxton and Huettel, Song & McCarthy, should support an fMRI researcher at the grad student or post-doc level.

They formed a society deeply divided along lines of race, skin colour, economic position and educational level. Dr Brereton looks at how the white elite, both European and Creole, was able to control the society, largely unchecked by the Imperial power and its agents in Trinidad, and then investigates the emergence of a group which would challenge that control: the coloured and black middle class. This book makes an important contribution to the history of the West Indies, and especially to the history of Trinidad, still largely unresearched. It will interest historians and sociologists concerned with the development of post-emancipation Caribbean societies and with race relations in the Americas after slavery.

a book that does what the title says

i write this recommendation to emphasise to potential readers that this is a very worthy study of the extinction of the Thylacine. whilst true that this book will not inspire hope that this most unique of creatures survives, it does unravel the reasoning behind it's rapid fall into extinction. Paddle offers a gentle introduction to the species' biology and ecology, aswell as a history in captivity, but it is his research of bounty records and contemperary accounts that sets this work above others. scientific maybe, but well planned, researched and written, and the twist he brings in regarding the reason for the bounty is worthy of an agatha christie novel! an excellent piece of work and well suited to conservation biologists, natural historians and anyone with an interest in the twentieth century's greatest loss.

Hopefully Not The Last.

A very well written and comprehensively documented book. The author has gone to a lot of trouble to back his views as any dedicated historian should. Paddle has uncovered many myths about the thylacine and has revealed the fact the humans would have benefited by the loyalty and companionship of this creature. The thylacine has many things in common with the domesticated dog (though of course it is a marsupial. )
This does not mean I agree with everything Paddle says but he does uncover attitudes all too common in the study of any historical subject. That is the tendency to generalise from one example. For example because one thylacine wouldn't eat wombat in one particular place the idea got around that 'thylacines wouldn't eat wombat.' A small point, I know, but this tendency to generalise from one example is very common in historical studies. It is related to the laziness of people who want simple answers when in fact history is often very complex. Paddle demonstrates a complex view of the history of the thylacine.
Not being an evolutionist I see the history of the thylacines differently than Paddle though I have great respect for the effort and professionalism he has put into this book. Paddle is honest in the sense he would be extremely happy to be proved wrong and that the thylacine still exists. (Not stated in this book but in an interview.)

Very good edition. Has all you could ever want!

The Bible I use-King James Version, by the way--doesn't have an Apocrypha in it, so I decided to pick up this copy, partly because this edition was the KJV version, and partly because it matched the size of my Bible. I'm in to the Bible so I am curious about anything and everything associated with the Book of Books. I find the canonization process to absolutely fascinating. Moreover, Thomas Aquinas, my favorite philosopher, frequently cites Apocryphal books in his writings, so it followed as a matter of course that I would want to get this book.
This is a "top of the line" version of the Apocrypha. It has an introductory essay and table of contents. The footnotes are for alternate readings on the text, but do not cross-reference the text with the Apocrypha, or the Bible proper. The printing is wonderful-I haven't found any typos, or faded text. The versification is kept in the left margin, so the text is kept eye friendly, and the poetic portions are set apart as in the NIV.
I am surprised at the number of books included in the Apocrypha. It is the "fattest" version I have seen that isn't a musty scholar's book. It has the standard books, plus 3 and 4 Maccabees, Psalm 151, the prayer of Manassah, and two more books of Esdras. I think this is all anyone could want in an Apocrypha.
For a more user-friendly version of the Apocrypha, would recommend the Godspeed Translation, which has a modern English style, along the lines of the J. B. Phillips translation. Plush, this edition has great headnotes for each chapter, and the numbering is kept in the margins, so it doesn't break up the text..
The Apocrypha is a fun book. Yes, theology is fun, since it is a form of learning. You a given a better perspective on how things went between Malachi and Matthew, and are exposed to profound wisdom literature. If you like proverbs, read "The Wisdom of Solomon," or "Eccelsiasticus, or the Wisdom of Jesus, son of Sirach." My favorite book is Tobit, which has a wonderful Orphic love story.

Understandable, but somewhat flat

I have stand alone copies of the Apocrypha (or Deuterocanonical Books) in the KJV and NRSV and as part of complete Bibles in the RSV-CE and the Third Millennium Bible. This NRSV is a good servicable translation, but I find it somewhat flat and less literate compared to the others. On the otherhand, for readers unused to the KJV/AV, that version of the Aprocrypha can be a little difficult. My favorite translation of the Apocrypha is the RSV. It is more readable to a 21st century reader than the KJV/AV translation and more literate sounding than the NRSV. Unfortunately, it is difficult to find it in a stand alone volume (i.e., not included in a complete Bible).

Since writing this review the RSV-Second Catholic edition has become available. I bought a copy specifically for the Apocrypha/Deuterocanonical books. It is, however, an excellent translation all around whether you are Catholic or not. (I am not.) I really wish we would see the ESV with Apocrypha.

good quality, could use more historical notes

OK if all you want is the text. If you want any sort of details on authorship, time period written, notes on why these may have been excluded from the protestant canon you'll need to look elsewhere. Nicely bound.

About the Author
Robert Jastrow is well known internationally as an astronomer and author of many widely acclaimed books. His initial research experience was in the field of nuclear physics, and his later work has been in planetary science, atmospheric physics, weather and climate prediction, and application of satellite observations to studies of earth resources. Dr Jastrow joined NASA when it was formed in 1958 and in 1961 set up NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies, a U.S. Government laboratory charged with carrying out research in astronomy and planetary science.

Michael Rampino is an associate professor of earth science and biology at New York University, and a research associate at GISS in New York. His research spans many areas of the earth sciences, especially the inter-relationships between the Earth's changing environments and the evolution of life. He is Series Co-Editor for the highly acclaimed Encyclopedia of Earth Sciences (Springer) and the Editor-in-Chief of the Earth Science Encyclopedia On-Line.

Everything you've wanted to know about life, the universe, and everything...

If you've ever wondered how we came to be here on this planet of ours, in our galaxy, in this universe, then this is the book for you. It is beautifully illustrated, very well explained, from cosmology to astronomy to planetary science to geology to chemistry to biology. Although intended as a textbook for a science-distribution requirement for non-science majors, I found it to be a fascinating read on its own. It renewed my wonder at this strange phenomenon of life and the many factors that enable it.

The Best All-In-One Universe & Life Book

This is the best all in one book on the universe and life I have come across in ten years of searching.

I have looked through countless books trying to piece together the knowledge that is well layed out in this book. Kind of frustrating actually - I wish I had found this book earlier.

It is designed to be a textbook for a science course to non-science students, and I wish I had taken a course like this. But I find that I can read it page by page and it is better then any other book on the universe I have found.

It goes from the big bang, through stars, formation of planets, earth, life, evolution from cells to mammals to man.

I got this book used for a great price from an amazon seller... It was on remainder, new but with some pages stuck together. A great deal!
