heavy, but good

This is a dense but ultimately rewarding introduction to the subject matter. Shaw's prose is at best elliptical; it's very easy to lose the forest for the trees in this book, particular given Shaw's tendency to explain in exhaustive detail the procedural workings of the various international and regional organizations. Although it sometimes reads like a very, very long grocery list, it is an essential reference book for anyone hoping to learn about public international law. Overall, it's a very thorough introduction to the subject matter, and is much more accessible the second and third times through. Complemented by an excellent index and supplementary materials.

the jay treaty was signed in 1794...it is easy to see how a mistake may be overlooked and the date of 1974 may creep into the text of such a voluminous work. In the light hereof I think the reader from Korea was unnecessarily harsh...editing mistakes are an everyday occurrence and the date was as easy as a search in yahoo to verify.

The complexity of international law does not arise solely from the content of its statues but also from the legitimacy of its enforcement. The laws of cities, states, and nations are typically accompanied by a monopoly on how to enforce these laws. Their citizens have agreed to conform to these laws and their legitimacy as cities, states, and nations arises from this agreement. If citizens choose to violate these laws they are punished accordingly. But what entity oversees the punishment when laws between nations are violated? Such laws come under the umbrella of international law, the subject of this book, and their enforcement is only possible if the nations agree to this enforcement.

The question of enforcement usually arises in the context of the legitimacy of the use of force or acts of war between nations, and is dealt with in some detail in this book. But there are many other aspects of international law that are discussed, and some readers may want to deal with the sheer size of the book by selecting those areas they are most interested in. A study of international law has become essential in today's world, due in part to the many wars that have broken out, some of them definitely bearing the mark of aggression and "war crimes", but also because of trade and patent disputes, along with the availability of complex financial products that need to operate across borders.

The book is heavily referenced, satisfying those skeptical readers who need to delve into even more of the details. The author presents international law as a `separate system' of law, as one that is not merely an adjunct to the laws of two or more countries. There is no legislature, no system of courts, and no institution to establish legal rules. Thus enforcement becomes an issue, at least if one insists on comparing international law with domestic law, and thus the author raises the question early on as to the status of international law as actually being a legitimate subfield of legal thought. It seems that the concept of coercion and its use is essential for qualify a system of statements as being a legal system. The author addresses these issues early on in the book, and as expected he concludes that one cannot ascertain the character or nature of international law solely with respect to a definition of law based on sanctions. His goal then is to find out why states feel compelled to follow the statutes of international law. If they do not, then he believes no system of international law can exist. It follows immediately that compliance among nations is a necessary condition for international law. As a system of legal thought, international law governs `patterns of conduct' that nations are to comply with. A search for "stability" and "predictability" compels different nations to respect the system of international law. `Reciprocity' and risk aversion may dissuade states from violating these agreements, since there is no international police force to punish violations.

The author also traces the history of international law, which as a legal body of thought primarily has its roots in the last four centuries, but whose underpinnings can be trace backed for thousands of years. Very interesting in his treatment of this history is the origin of `natural law' which he traces back to the ancient Greeks and taken up (oddly enough) by the Romans. The doctrine of natural law has a few noted adherents of late, including a few who sit on the United States Supreme Court. But as can easily be ascertained by perusing the author's history, international law is well represented geographically and culturally, a fact that is sometimes forgotten in Western culture. This "Eurocentric" view however has been weakened for the last several decades according to the author. Philosophical speculations, theology, and political science of course have played a role in the content of international law, and in this regard the author discuss the impact of positivism. Marxist-Leninist doctrine of course played a huge role especially in the late nineteenth century and all through the twentieth century. Modern developments in the legal theory of international law have been very influenced, as has every other realm of human activity, by mathematics, particularly in the use of game theory and decision theory. The author discusses this briefly, along with "feminist" approaches to legal reasoning.

But if international law has not formal body of courts or presiding legislature, how is one to judge objectively cases or grievances that interested parties classify as being under the umbrella of international law? One needs test cases, precedents, documentation, or "sources" as the author calls them to give some sort of degree of certainty to the legal process. He devotes an entire chapter to this topic, and states early on that he believes international law does exist and has sources from which one can extract rules and perform useful analysis. What might be called "grassroot" behaviors and rules or "customs" which at first glance may be dismissed as irrelevant play a very important and dynamic role in international law the author argues, and he gives extensive discussion on why he thinks this is the case. And interestingly, he characterizes treaties as being a modernized version of creating law through custom. Of course the United Nations and other institutions have acted as sources, provoking sometimes much skepticism as to their efficacy in this regard.

If countries or states had laws on their books that directly conflict with international law or are at odds with it to some noticeable degree then a resolution or compromise must be found. Thus the `municipal laws' of a state must be related to the legal frameworks of international law, and the author devotes an entire chapter of the book to this topic. He outlines briefly the different schools of thought on this relationship, before he decides on a "realist" approach to this issue, and he clearly supports the notion that international law cannot be evaded by a state by applying its internal legal rules. He then discusses historical evidence that shed light on the complexity of this assertion, including real court cases from Great Britain and the United States.

About the Author
Sir John Houghton CBE, FRS is a former Chairman of the Scientific Assessment Working Group of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, Chairman of the UK's Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution, Vice President of the World Meteorological Organisation, President of the Royal Meteorological Society, and Professor of Atmospheric Physics at Oxford University. He was Chief Executive of the UK Meteorological Office from 1983 to his retirement in 1991. As well as the previous editions of this book, he is author of The Physics of Atmospheres (Cambridge University Press, in three editions), and has published numerous research papers and contributed to many influential research documents. Sir John and his wife Sheila live in Wales.

Fair, balanced, scientific, non-partisan, clear.

I have to take immediate issue with the [anonymous] reviews below that claim that this book doesn't address the difference between natural climate cycling and anthropogenic climate change: that difference, in a nutshell, is PRECISELY what this book deals with. Those reviewers never read it, or failed completely to follow its line of reasoning. This is NOT a partisan, political, ideological book. It is simply a guided tour of the science of climate change, revised in 2004. It carefully parses the current research. Read the table of contents [you can click on it at the top of the page] and see that the book is organized around the following inevitable questions: Is climate changing? How much is it changing? How much of that change is caused by people? What are the likely effects, short- and long-term, of these changes? What can we do about it? In the case of climate change, despite all of the political complications that have accrued to what was originally science, these questions are PRECISELY the ones a thinking person needs to ask. To have a book structured around them, referring, as it does, to the best [scientific, independently-refereed] research is a gift. It seems that almost everybody today picks their position on climate change as part of an ideological package-deal: most American conservatives almost automatically disdain the science because the Bush White House and Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter disdain it. Most American progressives almost automatically embrace the NOTION of climate change without actually knowing the science, because Al Gore, et al, have told them to. Both positions, taken in ignorance of the science, are ideolgical and symptomatic of the worst party-line politics. I urge you to read the science. It will take some effort, but that effort is our civic duty. This book has no agenda other than compiling the research and putting it before the reading public in an accessible format.

Yes, It Really Is A Good Complete Briefing on Global Warming

The title of the book "Global Warming - The Complete Briefing" is aptly named, as it is an excellent briefing, or primer, on the subject of global warming. The book avoids the politics of global warming, which can grow tiresome to those of us who actually work in the climate change field. Instead, the book focuses on the basic science behind global warming, and is a very balanced, non-partisan approach to causes, effects, uncertainties, and potential impacts.

The reading level of the book is college level science, similar to a beginning or intermediate level physical science or meteorology class. If you are looking for an over-all guide to the science of global warming, this is a great book. If you are looking for a less academic, more popular-culture point of view on global warming, look into "Hell and High Water - Global Warming - The Solution and the Politics and What We Should Do" by Joseph Romm for an eminently enjoyable, easily readable guide to some of political and cultural aspects of global warming.

Essential Reading for Moving Past the Hype

This is an essential book for anyone who wants to move past the media hype on this important subject. It covers the breadth of the science in an accessible manner, looking at mechanisms, measurements and the broad sweep of science informing the global warming debate. It is notable that the only people who profess dislike of this book are people who have not read it. No one can deny that the author has brought together a huge mass of information and presented it in an accessible manner which nevertheless dispenses with alarmism and lays any residual scepticism to bed.

Unusually for such a work, chapter 8 looks at why we should be concerned. Or rather, why we should care if - as is the case - there will be winners as well as losers from climate change. Houghton discusses his personal belief there, and successfully brings issues of religion and ethics into the debate - something which, as he points out, is all too often deliberately left out of the discussion.

Some people dislike such an approach in a book on science. Some will think that a breath of fresh air. Whether you agree with him or not, it is good to read a Christian writer explaining why Christians should not be siding with the climate change sceptics. Nevertheless if you don't want that in a book then just ignore that chapter - the book is still more than worth its price.

He has written on Greek drama, later Greek literature - including most recently Lucian: Chattering Courtesans and Other Sardonic Sketches (2004) - and on Neo-Latin writing and is a co-author of the Reading Greek and Reading Latin series, and author of Reading Medieval Latin (1995).

Review of Sidwell's 'Aristophanes the Democrat'

Sidwell sets off on the wrong foot by positioning himself as an outsider. The tone of the work feels like a fight against some unclear consensus. Certainly, it's clear that he's offering a new, stronger position on the relationship between Aristophanes and Athenian politics, but what isn't clear is how precisely this varies from the typical scholar's position. I respect Sidwell for working hard to draw together evidence for his ideas on metacomedy, but I remain unconvinced. Much of his evidence may be merely conjecture, and the lack of ancient evidence for the sort of metacomedy that Sidwell suggests, and attempts to push aside, is for me altogether more telling than the bits and pieces here assembled.

CONFUCIAN RELEVANCE

Daniel A. Bell and Hahm Chaibong have edited this book to answer the question-- is Confucianism a dead tradition or is it meaningful for the contemporary world. The editors think it is a living tradition and so do I but for different reasons. The core of Confucianism is its humanism. Daniel Bell, one of the editors, assumes that "some form of capitalism is here to stay for the foreseeable future and any realistic defense of economic arrangements in East Asia needs to take this fact into account." Since I am not interested in using Confucian philosophy in order to make a "defense of economic relations in East Asia" but rather to follow the logic of its humanistic values, and also holding that capitalism and humanism are incompatable, I cannot agree that this book-- slanted as it is to use Confuciansm to back up gobalization processes dominated by the West, represents a truely relevant use of this philsophy in the modern world.

John R. Chávez is currently Professor of History at Southern Methodist University. He is the author of The Lost Land: The Chicano Image of the Southwest (1984), which earned him a Pulitzer Prize nomination. About the Author
Jonathan Bate is Professor of Shakespeare and Renaissance Literature at the University of Warwick, a Fellow of the British Academy and a Governor of the Royal Shakespeare Company. His books include Shakespeare and Ovid (1993); John Clare: A Biography (2003) - winner of the 2004 Hawthornden Prize and the 2005 James Tait Black Memorial prize for biography; The Genius of Shakespeare (1997); and Soul of the Age: The Life, Mind and World of William Shakespeare (2009). He was the editor of the Arden edition of Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus(1995).

Michael Dobson is Professor of Shakespeare Studies at Birkbeck College, University of London.

Andrew Gurr is Emeritus Professor of English at the University of Reading. As chief academic advisor, he was a key figure in the project to rebuild Shakespeare's Globe Theatre in London. His many publications include Shakespeare's Opposites, The Admiral's Company 1594 1625, The Shakespearean Stage 1574 1642, 4th edition (2009) and Playgoing in Shakespeare's London, 3rd edition (2004). About the Author
Ann Raimes is Professor of English at Hunter College, City University of New York, where she has taught for 30 years. In addition to teaching undergraduate composition courses, ESL writing courses, and graduate courses in rhetoric and composition, she was in charge of the Developmental English Program students for ten years and has held a variety of administrative posts in the English Department, including directing the first-year composition course. She also chaired a CUNY-wide ESL Task Force, 1993-94, and was chair of International TESOL's Publication Committee, 1989-91. Author of eight textbooks for composition--three of them are published by Houghton Mifflin--and ESL courses (many in several editions), Ann Raimes also publishes research and theoretical articles and has been invited to give keynote addresses in Singapore, Hong Kong, Rome, Athens, and in many parts of Canada and the US. Her research interests are the writing process, second language writing, grammar instruction, writing across the curriculum, and Web-based instruction.

I got this book because I needed it for my adv english class.
It covers almost every trick there is and it has great examples as well. I'd recommend as a support book for writers with some knowledge of the language.

I have taught ESL, foreign languages, writing and study skills for 30+ years. Never before encountered such a clear, concise handbook for all-purpose use. EVERYONE could benefit from a having a copy of this book on their desks!

Most recently, I chose it as a quick review of basics for a group of foreign military officers writing research papers. They loved its easy access. NOW, my 17 year-old son is using it for a quick reference while writing his college application essays.
