Useful but uneven
By Florentius
This book is 600 pages of recent scholarship on the Age of Justinian divided into 20 articles from a variety of scholars, mostly from the English-speaking world. Ambitious in scope, it covers the many different aspects of life in the Justinianic era: religious, economic, political, legal, military, social, and artistic.

As an edited collection of papers, it suffers from the general curse of that particular format, namely uneven quality. Several of the articles are superior, providing useful information clearly and presenting new ideas in a compelling fashion. Among these, I found the articles by John F. Haldon (Economy and Administration: How Did the Empire Work?), Caroline Humfress (Law and Legal Practice in the Age of Justinian), Charles Pazdernik (Justinianic Ideology and the Power of the Past), and Joseph D. Alchermes (Art and Architecture in the Age of Justinian) to be the most insightful, informative, and well-written. I dog-eared the most pages in Pazdernik's article, which is generally a good indication that the author had a great number of interesting points to make in his discussion of John the Lydian.

In the less useful camp, I found the article on "Mediterranean Plague in the Age of Justinian" to be a confusing jumble of facts and ideas, and considerably less helpful than I had hoped. Also, the article "Emperors and Popes in the Sixth Century: The Western View" was simply bizarre. The author seemed at great pains to hold to the pathetic unwritten academic stricture: "Say nothing which may put the Catholic Church and the Papacy in a good light." One would think that in an article covering the relationship between Justinian and the various Popes of Rome, the deposition of Pope Silverius by Justinian's agents in Italy would have merited more than a one-line mention.

In the "undecided" camp was the article by Leslie Brubaker, "The Age of Justinian: Gender and Society." The article begins with an eye-rolling statement of doctrinaire feminist orthodoxy, namely that male and female behavior has nothing to do with genetics, but is a wholly social construct. After this inauspicious beginning, the article goes on to discuss some very interesting topics indeed. Getting beyond the hardly credible theory that Theodora's "burial shroud" speech is a Procopian fabrication, the author's discussion of Anicia Juliana and her patronage of the great church of St. Polyeuktos made for very interesting reading.

The book has many other useful bits as well: two sections of color plates which are referred to in the articles; several maps of Constantinople, the Roman Empire and Mediterranean world in the 6th century showing the political, economic, and military situation; and two very helpful tables which lay out the civic, military, and palatine administrations in graphic form. Overall, this book is a handy introduction to the Age of Justinian and will be a good starting point for serious students of late Roman/early Byzantine civilization.

Generally excellent but occasionally imperfect articles; stellar addenda, maps, and plates
By Kirialax
As this is a large collection of twenty articles on widely divergent topics, I will attempt to give some individual treatment to separate articles. In a collection of articles like this, one should not expect that a few minor issues should hold down the entire volume, especially since so many topics and authors are represented. To start with, this book is well-organized, and covers a wide breadth of topics relating to the central sixth century. Physically, it is an attractive, solid book with good weight to it. There are two fairly substantial sections of plates, the first entirely in colour, primarily showcasing some of the brilliant artwork from this age including the Ravenna mosaics and the Hagia Sophia. The second set of plates is all greyscale, but contains useful images of coins, architecture, and manuscript folios. Sixteen maps (!) are included throughout the text. Cambridge University Press sure knows how to make me happy. Another wonderful feature that I was not expecting is the select list of ancient sources. While it is not complete and the descriptions are typically limited to a small paragraph per source, the brief introduction as well as references to modern translations and major works in English will undoubtedly be useful to students.

The articles themselves are generally very good and informative. Given that there are twenty of them, I am only going to comment on a few. Horden's article on the plague was absolutely exceptional. I will not disagree with the other reviewer Florentius' argument that the article is somewhat of a mess, but having studied enough modern literature on the plague I am convinced that she does far more than an acceptable job in representing the state of scholarship. The evidence is enormously contradictory and hard to work with, and she does a fine job of demonstrating just how difficult it is to assess the plague. I found John Haldon's article on the economy and the administration of the empire to be rather uninspired, but perhaps that is because I've read many of his books that deal extensively with just that topic (most recently, Byzantium in the Iconoclast Era, c.680-850: A History discusses much of what he describes here in much greater detail) but it still remains an invaluable summary. Maas' introduction chapter is actually quite good and helps to set the stage for the entire volume. He discusses the changing nature of the Roman Empire in the east in the sixth century and Justinian's role in fusing Roman, Greek, and Christian civilization into something new, as well as outlining some of the continuities and changes that took place during the Age of Justinian. Croke's article on Constantinople was rather uninspiring. Perhaps the editor felt that it was necessary to have a description of the city where so much of the power politics of the age of Justinian took place and where its namesake figure lived most of his life, but the article is utterly unremarkable and adds little to the discussion. Alchermes' article on the art and architecture of the age is similarly uninspired, but has a few interesting notes on the relation between art and power. Lee's article, 'The Empire at War' is much like Haldon's in that it is a good description of the effectiveness of Justinian's armies and how they were organized. It is nothing new, but the fact that it is a succinct summary will make it useful for students. Pazdernik's article on Justinianic ideology was quite interesting and provides a unique view into imperial propaganda through the use of Roman law. Like Florentius, I share Sotinel's reservation about the article on emperors and popes in the sixth century: why does the arrest of Pope Silverius get so little attention. Other than that, however, I found the article to be rather illuminating, especially given that it is a western view towards an eastern Roman emperor who felt that he had the authority to meddle in religious matters. I actually found myself reading Brubaker's article on gender and society. This is not the sort of article that I would regularly read, but I am sure glad I did. Her assertions and conclusions actually seem rather irrelevant, but the meat of the article discusses how to read the works of Prokopios and John Lydos in light of gender history, which is important. I have long suspected that the prominent role of women in Prokopios was used to contrast the behaviour of the men to "old fashioned" Roman morals, and Brubaker supports these ideas. I would take it further than she does in regard to the 'Anekdota', but that was not the goal of the article. No one intending to read Prokopios should skip Brubaker's article, despite how irrelevant its title makes it sound. Donner's article on the background to Islam may seem like the odd man out, but it actually fits of the volume quite well as he does an excellent job of demonstrating how Islam fits into the late sixth and early seventh centuries.

This is a fine set of articles by some of the most important scholars in the field supplemented by a generous selection of maps, plates, and tables. A few little criticisms of a few articles in not enough to warrant knocking off a star. An absolutely essential read for understanding Justinian and his era.

The Economic History of Latin America since Independence (Cambridge Latin American Studies), by Victor Bulmer-Thomas

This book covers the economic history of Latin America from independence in the 1820s to the present. It stresses the differences between Latin American countries while recognizing the similar external influences to which the region has been subject. Victor Bulmer-Thomas notes the failure of the region to close the gap in living standards between it and the United States and explores the reasons. He also examines the new paradigm taking shape in Latin America since the debt crisis of the 1980s and asks whether this new economic model will be able to bring the growth and equity that the region desperately needs. The Economic History of Latin America Since Independence
By A Customer
Not a single Latin American republic has achieved the status of developed nation after nearly two hundred years from colonial rule. The vast abundance of land, labor and natural resources has not delivered the long-awaited fruits of economic growth and economic development. Victor Bulmer-Thomas provides in this book an excepcionally detailled and balanced account of the factors that affect economic progress until the initial period of implementation of market-oriented reforms. It is in summary, an incomparable source of economic history information for those in love with the Latin American region. For a complete understanding of all the materials contained in the book, certain economic background is advisable.

Leaders in Animal Behavior: The Second Generation, by Lee Drickamer, Donald Dewsbury

Animal behavior, as a discipline, has undergone several key transitions over the last 25 years, growing in both depth and breadth. Key advances have been made in behavioural ecology and socio-biology, in the development of studies integrating proximate and ultimate causation, in the integration of laboratory and field work, and in advances in theoretical work in areas such as sexual selection, foraging and life-history traits. Thus it is appropriate to relate the individual stories of those who have had significant impacts on the field as we know it today. Leaders in Animal Behavior: The Second Generation is a collection of autobiographies from 21 individuals that have been peer selected, and have provided unique and important contributions to the field in the past 25 years.

Review
"It is a fascinating collection of essays by a group who have all made (and many continue to make) significant contributions to this interdisciplinary field. I really enjoyed this book and would encourage anyone who wants a historical perspective on the field to read it. It would make a great starting point for a graduate seminar that traces the history of the development of major ideas in animal behavior and behavioral ecology since the 1960s."

How can the law of the European Union be most effectively taught in the face of the EU's current upheavals? With this new book a team of specialists provide a comprehensive survey of EU law, placing it in its social, political and economic contexts. The book's innovative approach, coupled with a stimulating and accessible writing style, allows the student to engage fully with the material. The book charts the development of the European Union from its inception to the present day by exploring in detail the EU's institutions, its law-making, its administrative processes and its substantive law. Crucially, it incorporates recent key developments, such as the crisis over the Constitutional Treaty and the consequences of its apparent 'failure', as well as issues arising from an enlarged Europe. With cases and materials integrated throughout the text and recommended reading sections accompanying each chapter, this is essential reading for all European law students at undergraduate or postgraduate level.

'Distinguished by a preparedness to engage the wider intellectual and contextual issues which are so necessary for a proper appreciation of the 'new' Europe and its legal system, European Union Law: Text and Materials is a well-written and thoroughly comprehensive text; one which promises to assume a prominent position in the law school classroom.' Prof. Ian Ward,The University of Newcastle

'The authors of this book provide a clear synopsis and a penetrating analysis of European Union law and an edifying overview of its social, political and economic context and consequences. God, the Mind's Desire: Reference, Reason and Christian Thinking (Cambridge Studies in Christian Doctrine), by Paul D. Janz

How can human discourse refer meaningfully to a transcendent God? Paul Janz's book reconfigures this fundamental problem of Christian thinking as a twofold demand for integrity--integrity of reason and integrity of transcendence. It centers around an original yet faithful re-reading of Kant's empirical realism. Drawing on MacKinnon, Bonhoeffer, Barth and Marion, Janz challenges recent rushes to obscurantism and radicalization and culminates in a convergence between Christology and epistemology within empirical reality.

Review
"...a commendable achievement. It is a serious book that grapples with serious questions and refuses to settle for easy and fashionable answers." - William D. Wood

"The journey is worth the intellectual effort even if one disagrees with some of the paths taken and interpretive commentary along the way. The destination will be greeted with varying degrees of acclaim." Studies in Religion Jonathan R. Wilson, Acadia Divinity College

"His book provides an alternative to the obsurantism, radicalization, and anti-reason in many recent assessments of theological cognition while remaining alert to the hazards of traditional metaphysics. Finally, he offers a new way of understanding epistemology and christology which preserves the integrity of both of them." - Theology Digest

A superb survey of rational and theological 'integrity'
By E. Bougis
Dr. Janz, who apparently had a successful career in Christian music before becoming a professor of systematic theology, has written an eloquent and thorough survey, _God, the Mind's Desire_ (_GMD_), on the demands of rationality and transcendence in Christian theology. He uses the word "integrity" often to refer to those features of reason that make it truly reason (as opposed to a 'ruse' (Rorty, Derrida, et al.], an internalist-pragmatist instrumentality lacking true universality [Putnam], or an externalist-antisubjectivist ineluctability [Nagel]), and those features of transcendence that make it truly transcendent (as opposed to a mere limit criterion of human thought [Kant] or some positivist stricture on reason altogether [Barth]). That is a mouthful, I know, and Janz's prose does tend to clump up at times. But he is dealing with the very grounds of the human encounter of the revealed God, so it's unavoidable the trains of thought run pretty closely together.

The keystone of _GMD_ is Janz's very charitable and illuminating exegesis of Kant's _Kritik der Reinen Vernunft_, followed up by a fascinating discussion of how Bonhoeffer tried to carry on the Kantian project in a feasibly Christian way, particularly in his _Akt und Sein_. Janz's key premise is that only by taking seriously the *empirical realism* of Kant, considered as a genuine *inversion* of philosophy's perennial polarities (realism/antirealism, empiricism/idealism, etc.), can we hope to escape those polarities in a way that opens up adequate space for an account of transcendence and reason. The book builds very nicely: from a discussion of postmodern antirationalism (and a rejection of it, even in the guise of "radical orthodoxy", as a total non-starter for Christian theology), to a critical analysis of realism vs. antirealism, to a great exposition of Kant, to a discussion, following Donald MacKinnon, of tragedy as a finality of nonresolution (which thus leaves us anagogically "open" to transcendence), to Janz's conclusion--namely, that the Kierkegaardian and Bonhoefferian idea of despair *of* and penultimacy in the face of the Christ-question, "Who are you?" As you can see, this book is slap-full of ideas and figures, so I can't recommend a much better way to get a handle on so many related issues in one book.

Things I did not like about this book were: 1) Janz was very repetitive, 2) sometimes Janz was very repetitive, and 3) his Protestant anti-sacramentalism was really showing in his one-page dismissal of Marion's eucharistic referentialism. I also find it troubling that Janz did not really engage some of the giants of realism in recent Christian theology: T.F. Torrance, E. Gilson, J. Maritain, C. Gunton, E.L. Mascall, S. Jaki, et al. At least bring up Lonergan, if you're going to deal so much with Kantian transcendentalism as a method in Christian theology!

A book that you should read along with, or, better, after this, is Donald Keefe's _Covenantal Theology_ (_CT_). It was incredible to see Keefe's thesis--which you can get a sense of in my review of _CT_ at Amazon--confirmed so unwittingly in Janz's offhanded remark that the flaw in Marion's identifying the referent of divine transcendence in the Eucharist (and its episcopal matrix), is that "[w]e want fundamental theological discourse...to be meaningful outside of the actual Eucharistic celebration" (_GMD_, p. 190). As Fr. Keefe argues in great depth, this sort of "want" is inimical to Christian integrity, seeing as it either pits the concrete worship of the Church against some supposed absolute (pagan) cosmos in which the Eucharist--Christ fully present among us--is left dangling as an irrational offense against cosmic wholeness, or (often as a result of the first action) subsumes the Church's living worship under the cosmos and, once again, reduces the Gospel to a cosmic ideality. Try as he might, I am not convinced Janz has actually escape the Kantian enclosure.

A Philosophy of Cinematic Art, by Berys Gaut

A Philosophy of Cinematic Art is a systematic study of cinema as an art form, showing how the medium conditions fundamental features of cinematic artworks. It discusses the status of cinema as an art form, whether there is a language of film, realism in cinema, cinematic authorship, intentionalist and constructivist theories of interpretation, cinematic narration, the role of emotions in responses to films, the possibility of identification with characters, and the nature of the cinematic medium. Groundbreaking in its coverage of a wide range of contemporary cinematic media, it analyses not only traditional photographic films, but also digital cinema, and a variety of interactive cinematic works, including videogames. Written in a clear and accessible style, the book examines the work of leading film theorists and philosophers of film, and develops a powerful framework with which to think about cinema as an art.

if this is a textbook, avoid the course!
By paggy
This is absolutely the worst book I have ever been required to buy as a textbook for a course. It is definitely not appropriate for an introductory course, which was what I was taking. The writing seems to be almost deliberately abstruse. Seriously, if a professor is requiring this book for anything other than a senior level course, you should question whether he/she is someone you want to study with. Even for a senior level course I question if this book is really useful or interesting in any way.

Handbook of Functional MRI Data Analysis, by Russell A. Poldrack, Jeanette A. Mumford, Thomas E. Nichols

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has become the most popular method for imaging brain function. Handbook for Functional MRI Data Analysis provides a comprehensive and practical introduction to the methods used for fMRI data analysis. Using minimal jargon, this book explains the concepts behind processing fMRI data, focusing on the techniques that are most commonly used in the field. This book provides background about the methods employed by common data analysis packages including FSL, SPM, and AFNI. Some of the newest cutting-edge techniques, including pattern classification analysis, connectivity modeling, and resting state network analysis, are also discussed. Readers of this book, whether newcomers to the field or experienced researchers, will obtain a deep and effective knowledge of how to employ fMRI analysis to ask scientific questions and become more sophisticated users of fMRI analysis software.

Review
"Wow! Very often in neuroimaging a title has little relationship to what follows. That is clearly not the case with the Handbook of Functional MRI Data Analysis by Poldrack, Mumford, and Nichols. This relatively slender volume is all that handbook should be: It is crafted by true experts in the field, it is structured so that a newcomer can understand a method's strengths and weaknesses, but it also contains meaty information useful to experts. The book touches on all of the major analytical approaches current in the field and, while I don't agree with every choice the authors make, their advice is always well-conceived. This will be a standard reference on every neuroimager's shelf."
Steven Petersen, Washington University, St Louis

"This book, by some of the best in the field, will no doubt be the go-to book found in every imaging lab and recommended for all trainees. Poldrack, Mumford, and Nichols cover the most basic to sophisticated imaging analyses in a wonderfully accessible way."
B. J. Casey, Sackler Institute, Weill Cornell Medical College

"This is a great and timely book. The authors start with the basic concepts of fMRI and image analysis, develop the standard processings and statistical models, and finally explain in a simple and didactic style more advanced topics such as connectivity and machine learning techniques ... This textbook provides a comprehensive, and yet very clear, introduction to all of the important aspects of FMRI data analysis. It is extremely readable, and I would strongly recommend anyone new to the field of neuroimaging to read this from cover to cover. Psychologists and medics will find it accessible, and not mathematically daunting, while engineers and other methods researchers will find the breadth of imaging-related issues a very valuable background."
Steve Smith, FMRIB Analysis Group, Oxford

"The book is a must in any research laboratory or clinical environment using fMRI, and it is the perfect reading for students or researchers, whether they want to develop fMRI data analysis methods or understand and apply these methods. I believe this book will be a best-seller in our field and a reference for many years because it ideally fills the gap between introductory and advanced research textbooks."
Jean-Baptiste Poline, Neurospin, Institut d'Imagerie Biomédicale, CEA, France

About the Author
Dr Russell A. Poldrack is the Director of the Imaging Research Center and Professor of Psychology and Neurobiology at the University of Texas, Austin. He has published more than 100 articles in the field of cognitive neuroscience, in journals including Science, Nature, Neuron, Nature Neuroscience and PNAS. He is well known for his writings on how neuroimaging can be used to make inferences about psychological function, as well as for his research using fMRI and other imaging techniques to understand the brain systems that support learning and memory, decision making and executive function.

Dr Jeanette A. Mumford is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Texas, Austin. Trained in biostatistics, her research has focused on the development and characterisation of new methods for statistical modeling and analysis of fMRI data. Her work has examined the impact of different group modeling strategies and developed new tools for modeling network structure in resting-state fMRI data. She is the developer of the fmriPower software package, which provides power analysis tools for fMRI data.

Dr Thomas E. Nichols is the Head of Neuroimaging Statistics at the University of Warwick, United Kingdom. He has been working in functional neuroimaging since 1992, when he joined the University of Pittsburgh's PET Facility as programmer and statistician. He is known for his work on inference in brain imaging, using both parametric and nonparametric methods, and he is an active contributor to the FSL and SPM software packages. In 2009 he received the Wiley Young Investigator Award from the Organization for Human Brain Mapping in recognition for his contributions to statistical modeling and inference of neuroimaging data.

Excellent resource for lab
By Postdoc
I purchased this volume as a complimentary reference text to the Huettel fMRI book. This book is very clearly written and easy to read. It would make a good text for an introductory course on fMRI. It also includes descriptions of more recent analysis techniques and links to the appropriate software packages online. Overall, a good value for the money. Worth having in any neuroimaging lab.

Great intro to fMRI
By cwats
This text is a very good introduction to fMRI analysis methods. I must stress that this is going to be most useful for beginners; I was able to read the whole book over the course of 2 evenings. However, it's reasonably priced, contains a lot of the essential, historical references for the field, small and easy to carry, and is good to have on-hand.
You won't find any MR physics in this, but for a more thorough treatment of that (and even of analysis methods), I would recommend Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Second Edition by Huettel et al.
For a much more advanced, in-depth, technical treatment of neuroimaging analysis, I recommend Statistical Parametric Mapping: The Analysis of Functional Brain Images by Friston et al. However, that text is very math-heavy; Poldrack's text doesn't assume much math experience at all.

A great primer on fMRI
By Mark Twain
This is a well-written overview of fMRI processing. It will certainly be useful to those beginning work in the field. I think it's probably also useful as a quick reference or refresher to people who have been in the field for years to decades.

The great strength of the book is readability - I think I read it in 3 or 4 sittings with little effort. It is a good survey - it hits the high points of stages of processing and explains the differences, advantages, and disadvantages of various approaches without being longwinded or getting bogged down in details. It also notes which options are available in the various major software packages.

If you want to be reasonably up-to-date on how processing strategies across the field have evolved and are currently implemented, this book is a great place to start reading.

European Conquest and the Rights of Indigenous Peoples: The Moral Backwardness of International Society (Cambridge Studies in International

Paul Keal examines the historical role of international law and political theory in justifying the dispossession of indigenous peoples as part of the expansion of international society. Paradoxically, he argues, law and political theory can now form the basis of the recovery of indigenous rights. Arguing for the recognition of indigenous peoples as "peoples" with the right of self-determination in constitutional and international law, Keal questions the moral legitimacy of international society and examines concepts of collective guilt and responsibility.

Review
'Keal has written an important book that has been long overdue in the study of International Relations. Until now, the concerns of indigenous peoples have been present in the postcolonial literature but largely ignored in IR ( with a few exceptions). No doubt one of the reasons for this is the stupefying tendency to refer to such political movements as 'domestic'. Keal elegantly reveals the hollow basis of this argument.' International Affairs

'... Keal's book will give a good sense of the range of issues involved ... clear and concise ... an eloquent testimony to the intellectual and political challenges raised by the growing world-wide mobilization of indigenous peoples.' Ethnic and Racial Studies

'European Conquest and the Rights of Indigenous Peoples is a valuable contribution to a debate that has persisted since Europeans made first contact with alien civilizations. Keal presents his arguments with great clarity. Contemporary Political Theory

About the Author
Paul Keal is a Fellow of the Department of International Relations at the Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies, The Australian National University. He is the author of Unspoken Rules and Super Power Dominance (1983), editor of Ethics and Foreign Policy (1992), and with Andrew Mack, co-editor of Security and Arms Control in the North Pacific (1988).
