The Microscope in the Dutch Republic: The Shaping of Discovery, by Edward G. Ruestow

Focusing on the two seventeenth-century pioneers of microscopic discovery, the Dutchmen Jan Swammerdam and Antoni van Leeuwenhoek, the author demonstrates that their uneasiness with their social circumstances spurred their discoveries. Ruestow argues that while aspects of Dutch culture impeded serious research with the microscope, the contemporary culture shaped how Swammerdam and Leeuwenhoek responded to what they saw through the lens. For those interested in the history of science, this book considers the impact of institutionalization on microscopic research, and dissects the cultural, social and emotional circumstances that shaped early microscopic discovery.

Review
"This book has been a revelation to me, as I think it will be to many other readers whose knowledge of the historical aspects of microscopy are largely confined to the 19th century....Members of the Microscope Historical Society will be particularly interested in having this book, but I believe microscopists in general will enjoy this book and learn a great deal. I personally found the entire story fascinating, particularly the accounts revolving around the debates over spontaneous generation." John Gustav Delly, Microscope

"Ruestow offers us an extremely thorough study of a fascinating period in the history of science....Ruestow is to be congratulated for producing a work that will be read with profit for many years to come." G. L'E. Turner, Nature

"...an interesting and well-researched book....the book is a richly detailed account of the personal and public challenges that faced Swammerdam and Van Leeuwenhoek, two complex heros in the drama that is the history of science. Apart from the book's other strengths...this is certainly enough to make the book well worth reading." Lissa Roberts, Ph.D., Journal of the History of Medicine

"Ruestow has written a wide-ranging account of moicroscopy through the early 1830's. It is an invaluabele contribution to our increasingly complex account of the growth of early modern science." Harold J. Cook, Journal of Interdisciplinary History

"...Edward Ruestow's book is a pleasure to consult. Each time one reads it new truths emerge. Ruestow presents his well-documented research in a careful concatenation of detail. Weaving disparate findings into a complex tapestry he offers some clues as to the personal pressures and intellectual dynamics that motivated Dutch microsopial research in its early years. The result is useful reading for historians of science from the broadest catchment." Brian J. Ford, Isis

"Ruestow's book is deeply researched and gracefully written. ...carefully documented and attractively illustrated, and the information...will do much to broaden and refine the currently contested notion of the Scientific Revolution." Catherine Wilson, American Historical Review

"This is an interesting and admirable attempt to reconstruct the social and intellectual context of discovery, in this case, discovery with the microscope in the seventeenth-century Dutch republic. This book represents an important contribution to the study of early modern science and technology in general." Pamela H. Smith, Technology and Culture

Conceptual art consisted of a loose collection of related practices that emerged worldwide during the 1960s and 1970s. This collection of essays offers readers a wealth of new research on the earliest international exhibitions of Conceptual art; new interpretations of some of its most important practitioners; and a reconsideration of the relationship between Conceptual art and the intellectual and social context of the 1960s and 1970s. Of special note are the contributions that focus on the explicitly social and political aspirations of this influential avant-garde artistic practice.

Review
'... these contributions open up a welcome historiography of this period.' Art Monthly

'This detailed anthology is an expert recalibration of a theme thinly offered by recent publications. This anthology shows that the legacy of conceptual art remains a transfiguring subject for critics and, if so desired, becomes a profound interrogation for curators. Make it your guide.' Journal of Visual Culture

'... this is an incisive and scholarly contribution to the extant literature which ... may well become a benchmark for serious study of the subject area.' Art History

An excellent book
By Philip Stahl
Professor Schepard has done an excellent job of integrating the legal, psychological, and social science research in this book. Drawing on the findings of the Wingspread Foundation conference focusing on the needs of high conflict families in the courts, he recommends changes in the way that attorneys, courts, and mental health experts work together to help families changed by divorce. Focusing on the problems of litigation, he points out that the win-lose style of the courts does more harm than good for families and children in the family courts. He encourages mediation, with the hope that families can reach a win-win solution. He criticizes attorneys who are more focused on winning the case than helping the family. He urges attorneys to maintain the focus on the needs of families and children and set a role model of cooperation for the parents. He discusses the relative risks and benefits of using mental health experts to assist the judge, urging judges to be smart consumers of expert testimony and urging experts to avoid pitting one parent against the other. He supports the use of attorneys for children when conflict is high and parent education for parents to focus on the needs of children.
This book should be required reading for judges, family law attorneys, mediators, and mental health professionals who work with high conflict families in the court.

Family Courts - From Best Practices to an Ideal System
By Bill Howe
Professor Schepard integrates what social science has taught, mental health professionals have learned and courts are coming to accept as the most constructive and humane ways to assist families navigating the difficult transition of divorce. The Family Court model rejects the traditional adversarial litigation practices and encourages more collaborative conflict resolution protocols. Professor Schepard engagingly summarizes the overwhelming evidence that adversarial conflict during divorce harms children, dishonors the parties and sabotages cooperative parenting after a family is reconstellated by the divorce. He discusses best practices of various family courts in the United States and around the world and ends with a thoughtful and insightful prescription for the most enlightened family court for the future. Professor Schepard seeks to integrate insights of the legal, mental health and social science communities into a comprehensive vision of an ideal family court system. He has done so brilliantly. Every professional working with divorcing families should read this valuable book!

Roadmap for the Future
By Amazon Customer
Andy Schepard has written one of the most important books on court reform published to date. The recommendations in the final chapter are excellent and track with the most progressive reforms in family courts in the world, such as those reforms exemplified by the Oregon Task Force on Family Law and the very progressive New Zealand and Australian family courts.
We are witnessing a paradigm shift in the way courts, attorneys, and mental health professionals work with families. Prof. Schepard describes the new language which more accurately depicts the changes occurring within the social fabric of our time. This shift requires interdisciplinary cooperation and recognizes family law is a process and not an event.
Through his connections as the Editor of the Family Courts Review and an active member of the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts, Prof. Schepard has written a very forward thinking text, which should be required reading for anyone involved in family law in the world.

Promising increased efficiency and superior service, the quasi-government has grown as governmental functions have been delegated to new entities combining characteristics of public- and private-sector organizations. Jonathan Koppell argues that control of public policy is sacrificed when public policy is carried out by such hybrid organizations. Although they may be designed to limit the loss of public control, Koppell suggests that quasi-government should be limited to tasks that are not of critical importance to policy-makers.

Review
"Koppell's study of the quasi-governmental organizations brings a novel and needed perspective to the problem of bureaucratic control--one central to political science and administration. Comparing hybrid organizations such as Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac with traditional government agencies, he highlights the importance of specific aspects of organizational structure that allow elected officials to control bureaucracies. This work provides important ground work for further study of the proliferating range of public-private organizational arrangements." Todd R. La Porte, University of California, Berkeley

"The book contains an impressive analysis of current and classic literature and includes extensive background information on the agencies. Highly recommended." Choice

"A welcome addition to the growing literature on the government's increasing delegation of public responsibilities to organizations outside of the formal government structure." Journal of Public Administration Research and Theory

About the Author
Jonathan G. S. Koppell is Assistant Professor of Politics, Policy and Organization at the Yale School of Management, Yale University.

Important Subject, Fine Scholarship
By Douglas W Rae
Jonathan Koppell has written a fine and subtle analysis of hybrid organizations, ones which combine elements of the private firm with those of the government agency. He shows how such organizations -- Amtrack, the mortgage intermediaries Fredie and Fannie -- can be harder to control from Washington than regular public agencies. He also explores ways in which hybrids can sometimes be very productive instruments for public goals. This is a first-class study of an increasingly important topic.

Guidance on Governance in Uncertain Times
By Stephen W. Hiemstra ﻦ
As policy makers reflect on how to restructure major U.S. financial institutions and regulators, few resources are likely to be as helpful as Jonathan G.S. Koppell's study: The Politics of Quasi-Government--Hybrid Organizations and the Dynamics of Bureaucratic Control. Koppell reviews the literature on organizational structure and undertakes lengthy case studies of Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, among other institutions.

Among Koppell's bonafides include time working for the Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight (OFHEO), the safety and soundness regulator of Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae. [In July 2008, OFHEO was merged with the Federal Housing Finance Board (FHFB) to form the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA)]. Koppell studied at the Berkeley Department of Political Science and worked at the Yale School of Management as of 2003.

Koppell defines a new term: hybrid organization.

....A hybrid organization is an entity created by the federal government (either by act of Congress
....or executive action) to address a specific public policy purpose. It is owned in whole or part
....by private individuals or corporations and/or revenue to cover its operating costs (p. 12).

In his framework, government sponsored enterprises (GSEs) are a type of hybrid distinguished by private ownership, profitability and advantages derived from the organization's special relationship with the federal government (p. 14).

Koppell is especially interested in comparing the performance of government agencies with hybrids. Government agencies, for example, are controlled by Congress through administrative controls (legislation, budgets, hearings, appointments, oversight, executive orders, and so) while hybrids are controlled through regulatory controls (laws, regulations, policies, federal regulation, and so on) (pp. 38-46).

Koppell divides preference of principals, like Congress, into four categories: mission-related, non-mission-related, positive preferences, and negative preferences. He argues that hybrids are more likely to respond to negative, non-mission-related preferences because such preferences are easier to measure (pp. 71-75).

In making his case, he reviews the attempts of the Clinton Administration to increase allocation of credit to low-income homebuyers--a positive, mission-related preference. In a comparison of the Department of Housing and Urban Development's (HUD) response to this preference to the response of Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, he concludes that HUD was more responsive (pp. 81-88).

Koppell's careful analysis clearly sees limits to the expression of government policy through the vehicle of the hybrid structure. His interest is, however, narrowly focused on the effectiveness of control mechanisms reflecting his background as a political scientist. Wider topics, like dynamic aspects of organizational behavior or housing market development and efficiency, are not explored. As such, his work may be too focused for some policy analysts.

'It is uncommon to read a good book on anxiety disorders. This one, however, is unusually fine. Anxiety Disorders: Theory, Research and Clinical Perspectives is highly descriptive and clinically useful. It is well researched and a pleasure to read ... It is written in a compelling style, which is a benefit to the student, clinician, or educated layman. The references are excellent and the index is helpful. Witchcraft Persecutions in Bavaria: Popular Magic, Religious Zealotry and Reason of State in Early Modern Europe (Past and Present Publicat

This is a major, groundbreaking study by a leading scholar of continental witchcraft studies, now made available to an English-speaking audience for the first time. The author has compiled a thorough overview of all known prosecutions for witchcraft in the period 1300-1800, and shows conclusively that witch hunting was not a constant or uniform phenomenon: three-quarters of all known executions for witchcraft were concentrated in the years 1586-1630. The book also investigates the social and political implications of witchcraft, and the complex religious debates between believers and skeptics.

Witch-trials in early modern Germany
By Rune Hagen
This book is an English translation of Behringer's most important study "Hexenverfolgung in Bayern. Volksmagie, Glaubenseifer und Staatsräson in der Frühen Neuzeit", published in Germany 1987 (3. verbesserter Auflage 1997). In this southern part of Germany 900 witches were executed, and many more tried for witchcraft, between 1560 and 1730. Behringer finds that most trials occurred during years of particular dearth and famine. One of his conclusions is that every major persecution in this part of Germany was rooted in agrarian crisis. His book should be read by anybody who only knows about witch-trials from English-speaking countries. There are almost 500 fascinating pages in his book.

Thorough Study of Bavarian Witch Mania
By Ladine B. Housholder
Written originally as his doctoral dissertation, Behringer has done a remarkable job of compiling thousands of court, archive and church papers, documenting the hideous massacre of thousands of women accused of witchcraft during between 1300 to 1800, though the majority of the executions (usually by burning at the stake) took place between 1586 and 1630, years of great hardship, weather abnormalties and famine.

Since I live in Garmisch Partenkirchen in southern Bavaria, this topic is very interesting to me. I recently completed the translation into English of a small book on the same topic: "Witch Trials in Werdenfels" and noted that this author, Herr Behringer, had used this book as a source.

To quote Behringer's Preface: "Witchcraft beliefs evoked bitter debates, since three essential, early modern 'world views' collided on that very point: a traditional folk culture of magical beliefs, a new, fanatical, religious zealotry stemming from the Reformation/Counter Reformation, and an equally new secular rationalism, an early modern reason of state."

The old vs the new has always created problems but rarely with such devastating results to so many women and the families they left behind. When strange weather patterns resulted in crop failures and famine, when Inquisition techniques traveled across the mountains from Spain and Italy and when the local Church authorities began losing power, who better to blame than women... who might have been engaged in the healing (though suspect) arts, or who had a "witch's mark", or God forbid, who had red hair?

And once imprisoned and tortured (often repeatedly with terrible devices), the victims accused others: sisters, cousins, friends, mothers. I suppose one would ... just to get the pain to stop.

Though scholarly in approach, Behringer has created a very readable book in spite of the difficult subject matter. Many maps, charts and drawings illustrate the grim realities. Anyone interested in European history will want to read this book. Anyone interested in women's issues should read this book.

Excellent, and unrivaled.
By Jeremy
This bulky tome's title speaks for itself, so I'll forgo content specifics: Behringer's effort here is the unrivaled champion of the field, and any investigation into Early Modern German witchcraft persecutions ought to begin with this masterful summation, translated from German. Casual readers beware: Have an arm-brace and dictionary at the ready. Heavy, and highly academic.

"This is a must read for device entrepeneurs. I only wish I had such a roadmap when I was starting out in my career. Biodesign: The Process of Innovating New Medical Technologies is a wonderful guide with lucent case studies that illustrate the critical steps necessary for the translation of ideas into commercial solutions. It is the Gray's Anatomy of device innovation."
William Hawkins, Chairman and CEO of Medtronic

"Biodesign: The Process of Innovating New Medical Technologies is direct, clear and simultaneously sophisticated yet practical as it unravels the many issues related to successfully navigating the entire biodesign path from concept to final product launch. I highly recommend that anyone seriously interested in developing an entrepreneurial venture in the medical products field read this book. It is likely to spare budding entrepreneurs a lot of trial-and-error and painful on-the-job training."
Dean Kamen, Inventor and Founder/President of DEKA Research and Development

"The Chapters are thoughtfully organized. With an excellent blending of scientific information, clinical problems, and examples of solutions, including case studies, the book has succeeded in accomplishing its goal of being very practical. The ending of each chapter with a 'getting started' section can greatly facilitate the reader to get started with the information on valuable resources. The mirroring of materials on a website with active links is another wonderful feature. This allows the readers to gain rapid access to the FDA website, etc. This book of Biodesign will be the standard in this very important field. It will be of great value in the education of undergraduate and graduate students in biomedical engineering and related fields, as well as for industrial scientists and university faculties who educate/train young bioengineers or want to pursue the process of innovating new medical technologies themselves."
Shu Chien, M.D., Ph.D. UCSD

"Biodesign is a handbook for medical device entrepreneurs based upon the key premise that innovation is a process and skill that can be learned. Furthermore, the key to medical device innovation is getting the clinical need in correct focus. This book will walk the student through the innovation process from how to properly define the clinical need all the way through getting the company funded and developing a quality product. Important topics like the FDA regulatory process, patents, ethics, quality and manufacturing are addressed. I don't know of any other text that has the wealth of practical and usable information on the entrepreneurial process as Biodesign. This is a much needed 'how-to' book written by people who actually have done it many times themselves. No thirty-thousand foot views necessary or appropriate here. Each chapter has a 'getting started' section that will help guide the budding entrepreneur through the necessary steps. This book should be required reading for anyone wanting to develop a new medical device or to start a new company in the medical field."
William Brody, Former President, Johns Hopkins University

"Whether you're a physician with an idea, an engineer, or a businessman, this is a unique and powerful resource."

Essential text for medical devices entrepreneurs and innovators
By Betsy
I am a recent graduate of the Stanford Graduate Student of Business and have worked in the life sciences industry for many years. While at the GSB, I took the 2-quarter BioDesign class which used a beta version of this book as its text. The course - and text - has a rather ambitious aim, namely to explore the medtech entrepreneurial and innovation process and to do so in a cross-functional, comprehensive, and hands-on fashion. As one of the more popular courses at Stanford and one that has resulted in numerous new VC-funded start-ups, I think they have succeeded in this goal.

More so than entrepreneurialism in other industries, starting a new business in medical devices requires bringing together many disciplines and functions, including engineering, medicine, and business. This book takes this comprehensive view of the process. You'll learn about:

* Medical - learn about the clinical trials process for medical devices (e.g. 510k / PMA) ... learn how to put together a clinical development plan & clinical trials plan

* Engineering - learn about prototyping, produce concept definitions, R&D strategy

* Business - learn about doing a market assessment ... how to put together a reimbursement strategy ... how to do a marketing & business plan ... how build your financial models

But more than just looking at the individual disciplines, this text looks at the innovation *process*. That is, it walks through idea/concept creation and screening, researching new clinical need areas, and important early due diligence (i.e. IP searches, researching unmet medical needs, doing a stakeholder analysis). Then, once you have your concept it takes you through developing your early prototype and putting together a development and business plan. Next, it discusses how you will want to go about pitching this to VCs and obtaining funding to implement your product. And finally, it touches on operation issues and exits once your product is launched.

The book is highly readable and is accessible to a wide range of backgrounds and knowledge levels. This is because it was designed to be a text for a course that was taken by b-school students, engineering graduate students, and med school students. Additionally it is very hands-on, and discusses the tangible *things* that need to be done as you go through the start-up innovation process, and includes numerous case studies. Some chapters are rather dense but these can be skimmed until you actual need to reference the material.

On caveat is that, while I think this text can be relevant for people that are interested in innovation and start-ups in biotech or other areas of life sciences, it is clearly targeted to medical devices & medtech.

Being a successful entrepreneur in medical devices requires a thorough understanding of each of these steps in the innovation process and all of the cross-functional disciplines that are involved in bringing a new innovation to market and to patients. This textbook understands this and tackles this topic with that principle in mind.

Fundamental resource for medical device engineers
By Erika
As a medical device engineer with experience at both small and large companies, I was skeptical whether one text could be considered a go-to reference for medical device design. After a year of of experience with the beta version of this text, my doubts were allayed. The text is thoughtfully and logically laid out in a step by step approach to designing medical devices. One particularly unique aspect of this book, is that it provides a well-balanced blend of medicine, business and engineering in its approach. This is largely due to the extensive experience of its authors and their collaboration in its creation. The case studies provided in each chapter provide "hands-on" examples of the key information. For me, I found these sections the most interesting and the most inspiring to read. I found myself reading the case studies first and then going back through the rest of the chapter text to pull out additional information.

As I have found with only a handful of my engineering texts ( admittedly, I have shelved my Vector Calculus and PChem texts), I find myself constantly pulling this text off my shelf and referring to it--particularly for the extensive list of resources that are included at the end of each chapter. It has taken so much of the guess work and internet searching out of the equation!

There are so many unknowns and potential pitfalls in the development of medical devices. This text is a key tool to entrepreneurs who would like to avoid and/or prepare for as many of these unknowns as possible!

Filling a Big Void in Medical Technology Innovation
By Thomas M. Loarie
Stanford University has been a leader in facilitating the creation and development of medical technology companies. A unique relationship has existed for a number of years between academic medical center and its engineering, science, and graduate business schools. The University also benefits from its location in the heart of Silicon Valley. In recent years, the University has created a noteworthy BioDesign Innovation program focused on the process of innovating new medical technologies by integrating faculty from its various colleges and experienced medical technology entrepreneurs.

Authors Stefanos Zenios (Charles A. Holloway Professor), Josh Makower, MD (co-founder of Stanford's Biodesign Innovation Program), Paul Yock, MD (Director of the Stanford Biodesign Program and the founding Co-Chair of the Department of Bioengineering), Todd J. Brinton, MD (Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine), Uday N. Kumar, MD (Associate Director, Curriculum of Stanford-India Biodesign), Lyn Denend (Research Associate), and Thomas M. Krummel, MD (Emile Holman Professor and Chair in the Department of Surgery, and Co-Director of the Stanford Biodesign Program)in "Biodesign" have taken the essence of the Stanford program creating a roadmap accessible to all on recognizing market opportunities, mastering the design process, and developing medical technology business know-how.

This readable and easy-to-read book includes a three-step, proven approach to the biodesign innovation process, experiences of hundreds of innovators and companies, in the form of case studies, quotes and practical advice, real-world examples, end-of-chapter projects, and Getting Started sections that will guide the reader through each of the key stages of the process and provide a template to create their own new medical devices.

Biodesign fills a big void for medical technology entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, universities, and, even, global medical technology corporations. At what may appear to be a high price for a book, "Biodesign," will, for those in medical technology innovation, prove to be a bargain.
