About the Author
James E Mark is a Distinguished Research Professor for the department of Chemistry at the University of Cincinnati, Ohio. He has been a Visiting Professor at several institutions as well as having extensive research and consulting experience in industry. His current research interests pertain to the physical chemistry of polymers, including the elasticity of polymer networks, hybrid organic-inorganic composites, liquid-crystalline polymers, and a variety of computer simulations. A Fellow of the American Physical Society, he is also an editor of the journal 'Polymer'. Amongst numerable achievements, he has been awarded the ACS Applied Polymer Science award and was also elected to the Inaugural Group of Fellows (ACS Division of Polymeric Materials Science and Engineering).

Leo Mandelkern is the R.O. Lawton Distinguished Professor of Chemistry Emeritus at the Florida State University.

Missippian Culture for the General Reader

The author has both excavated and written profusely on the Missippian Culture, centered in Cahokia to the East of Saint Louis, and the builders of the largest pyramids in North America. The culture flourished in the later Medieval times, just before the white men came to North America. Cahokia should be a famous as Chichen Itza and Tikal--this book is a superb introduction to the culture and to the scholarly discputes about its origins and acheivements.

Every well educated American should be familiar with Missippian culture. Read this book!

A history of the Mississippian people.

A very readable and comprehensive history of the endemic peoples of the Mississippi valley. Although Cahokia was the largest site structurally, pains are taken to present cultural development throughout the larger environment in the valley. From the early, less planned and less financed archaeology, through a broad look at these peoples, the text is fact-filled and efficient. This short, but well referenced and indexed book gives a thorough look at the Mississippi valley, from the initial building stages, to the tie in with the far-reaching 2,100 BC dry periods which helped bring about the downfall of Cahokia and endemic groups throughout the central and western areas of America. A must read.

Provacative and engaging account of Cahokia

Pauketat is a bit of a bomb thrower and he lobsquite a few well directed missiles in this work, but they all land to good effect and he gives a very good account of the fluorescence of the Mississippian culture at Cahokia. His argument holds together very well and his genuine passion for the subject keeps it quite engaging. My only real complaint is that the book basically ends with Cahokia, and does not really discuss the Mississippian in the Southeast at all, nor does it have much to say on Cahokia's precursors. I would love to see a volume on either subject that was as passionately, thoroughly, and engagingly written.

In a way this is almost a mirror of Kantner's work on the Anasazi, which is part of the same series, suffers from almost the reverse flaw Ancient Puebloan Southwest (Case Studies in Early Societies), barely discussing the Chacoan period, but illuminates what happened after the end of Chaco.

Highly recommended for those interested in the largest center in the Precolumbian US.

"Deep Brain Stimulation Management" is the perfect how-to guide for clinicians in the field who need to know the methods for programming patients. Heavy on the "how" and "why" and lighter on the theory, the book relays the many years of Marks' experience with DBS into easy-to-follow methods and techniques.

Impressive but flawed

Bowersock is a distinguished scholar- particularly of the Greek world- who delivered the Wiles lectures at Belfast- upon which this book is based- in the early 90's.

The book is terse, readable and compelling and it is clear that it would have made an effective lecture series. The importance of marytrdom is set in its cultural context- and its importance for the development of Christianity is analysed. The key mistake of this book is the highly controversial notion that the approach to death of Christian martyrs- because of the etymological development of the greek 'martyr'- was original and is divorcable from previous attitudes to self sacrifice. This rules out the highly likely role of the self sacrifice of the Maccabees of the second century as a formative influence for Christian notions of self sacrifice. This notion has not been approved by scholars- before and since. The Macabees were an important precursor to Christian martyrdom in the shaping of their religious identities.

This said, the book makes an important contribution to awareness of the etymological development of the word 'martyr' itself and problematises its ascription to instances of self sacrifice before the late second century. To call self sacrifice 'martyrdom' before this is shown to be a linguistic anachronism, since the term 'martyr' had not developed this aspect before then.

In summary, Bowersock's book is provocative and well worth reading for anyone interested in the construction of a Christian identity and in the self-definition of the early Christian community in antiquity. Bowersock's powerful knowledge of all things Hellenic generates some startling cross-cultural observations which are of integral importance to conceptions of the development of Christianity and of religion in general throughout antiquity. To be - qualifiedly- recommended.

A Precise Argument, Staunchly Defended

This book began as the series of Wiles Lectures delivered at Queen's University in Belfast in 1993. The author, G. W. Bowersock, taught Classics and History at Harvard University from 1962 to 1980. Then, from 1980 until his retirement in 2006, he was Professor of Ancient History at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton.

The central thesis of this book is that the terms martyr and martyrdom should not be associated with pagans who were willing to die for a philosophy, or with Jews who were willing to die for their faith. Why? Because, strictly speaking, those terms originated with and belong especially to Christians who lived in the Roman Empire during the second through fourth centuries. Bowersock offers a set of arguments rooted in philology and history in order to show that in the Roman Empire martyrdom meant something very specific.

In Chapter I, "The making of martyrdom," Bowersock attempts to reveal the precise definitions of martyr and martyrdom. Of course, there were accounts of people in the ancient world, other than Christians, who "provided glorious examples of resistance to tyrannical authority and painful suffering before unjust judges." So, then, what was different about true martyrdom per se? Bowersock answers that there were two things. First, starting with the Christians of the second century in their imperial Roman context, such courage was "absorbed into a conceptual system of posthumous recognition and anticipated reward." Second, and related to the first point, "the very word martyrdom existed as the name for this system" (5).

Chapter II, "The written record," sets out to corroborate the argument of the first chapter along the lines of literary analysis. Bowersock notes that the distinctive literary form called martyrology bears little resemblance to Jewish stories from the Old Testament book of Daniel, or from the second and fourth books of Maccabees. Instead, judging from their narrative technique and literary style, the Martyr Acts most closely resemble "pagan historical fiction" (26). The author concludes that "like the very word 'martyr' itself, martyrdom had nothing to do with Judaism or with Palestine" (28). Furthermore, Jewish martyrology sounds nothing like pre-Constantine Christian martyrology. In those accounts, for example, the victims are asked, according to formula, if they are ready to change their minds. Such inquisitions have a "distinctively Roman character" (37).

Chapter III, "The civic role of martyrs," begins with the simple observation that the Martyr Acts "take place in the greatest cities of the Roman world" (41). Why was this the case, and why is it significant? Bowersock explains that, from the Roman side, major cities included the deadly legal authority of provincial governors as well as the crowds who would gather for "spectacles of blood sport in the amphitheater." From the Christian side, "martyrdom in a city provided the greatest possible visibility for the cause of the nascent Church, and it simultaneously exposed the Roman administrative machinery to the greatest possible embarrassment" (42). Under these circumstances, pagans and Jews would unite publicly against Christian martyrs, a fact that underscores the author's thesis that martyrdom was a uniquely-Christian phenomenon vis-a-vis imperial Rome.

In Chapter IV, "Martyrdom and suicide," the author describes the eagerness, good cheer, and even laughter of some early martyrs. In many cases, their dispositions reveal a desire for martyrdom that amounted to suicide by state official (59-61). Because of this development, some Christian theologians took up the question of martyrdom as opposed to suicide. On the one hand, Tertullian argued that if some pagans voluntarily died for false and foolish notions, how much more should Christians be willing to die for the truth of the gospel? On the other hand, Origen and Clement of Alexandria spoke against all forms of voluntary self harm. The debate reached all the way to the time of Augustine, who argued at length that to kill oneself, or to provoke someone else to kill you, even for what is true, is wrong. Augustine's verdict combined with the effects of the Constantinian revolution to bring to an end to this major chapter of Christian history (73-74).

Four Appendixes, a "Select Bibliography" and an index round out this book. Each appendix is a commentary or extended footnote on one of the points in the text. The book could have used a map of the Roman world and a few illustrations. At any rate, Bowersock's lectures assert and advance a provocative thesis. One might quibble with a point here or there. Nonetheless, this book is a tour de force that no student interested in the topic should ignore.

A fantastic CD-Rom!

I consider this CD-Rom the best English dictionary on the market. Each entry has IPA symbols and also a red loudspeaker icon for the British pronunciation and a blue one for the American. A microphone icon let you practise your pronunciation.
The feature I like using every day is the QUICKfind with the automatic sound. You just point the mouse at a Word document or at the text on a web page and the software speaks up the sound for you. While listening to the sound, the QUICKfind let you have a small dictionary window open on the screen with the meaning of each word you are pointing the mouse at, and the two loudspeakers with both English and American pronunciations are still there. Just imagine all those foreign languages and literatures university students who are going to prepare for their oral exams and have to be able to read aloud loads of poems with a perfect pronunciation and also explain the words' meanings - what a lot of time saved with the aid of this software!
The main window has three other useful icons, i.e. Exercises, Pictures and Study pages.
Among the Exercises, you can find Word Exercises (adjectives and adverbs, affixes, homophones, irregular and problem verbs, noun forms, suffixes, verbs meaning `perform') and Pictures Exercises (animals, back, birds, body, car exterior, car interior, cars and trucks, clothes, flowers, foot, fruit, hair, hand, hats, head, in the kitchen, in the office, kitchen equipment, office equipment, phrasal verbs, planes, ships and boats, skeleton, sports, vegetables).

About the Author
King-Ning Tu is a Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of California at Los Angeles. Since receiving his Ph.D. in Applied Physics from Harvard University in 1968, he has gained 25 years' experience at IBM T. J. Watson Research Center as a Research Staff Member in the Physical Science Department. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society, The Metallurgical Society (TMS), and an Overseas Fellow of Churchill College, Cambridge University. Professor Tu has published over 450 journal papers, authored a book (Solder Joint Technology, 2007) and co-authored a textbook (Electronic Thin Film Science, 1992).

Prof Tu has made a distinguished job on writing this book. In all, it is very well explained and written. In addition, prof Tu knows his materials very well. I once enrolled a graduate course from Prof Tu using this book and I've learnt a lot from him. Highly recommended!

Really very good

This book is excellent. It contains most of the advanced mathematical methods required in engineering and physics. The treatment is clear, the material is very well explained and the examples are very well chosen. I really like the whole style of this book, which has a strong orientation to the application of these methods. In contrast to other mathematical-methods books that I have, this one was a pleasure to read, and it has become my first choice when I need to review some specific method while I am solving problems that involve partial differential equations, orthogonal functions, eigenfunction expansions, Fourier methods and other integral transforms, etc.
