"A decade or more ago, as researchers first recognized the key role of emotions in the ways groups deal with eaach other, the focus was naturally on emotions most obviously related to intergroup conflict, such as anger or fear. Now the conceptual focus has broadened to include a wider range of group-based emotions. Collective guilt is particularly interesting, because it can lead to prosocial behaviors (such as apologies or restitution to injured groups), but also can motivate people to turn a blind eye to their own groups's past misdeeds. About the Author
Nyla R. Branscombe is Professor of Psychology at University of Kansas. She is well known in the field of Intergroup Relations, with more than 75 articles and chapters published. She has been co-recipient of several major research awards from the Society of Personality and Social Psychology and the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues.

Bertjan Doosje is Senior Lecturer at University of Amsterdam. His research has focused on group identification and its consequences for intergroup judgements. He currently serves on two journal editorial boards. He was co-recipient (with Branscombe) of the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues Otto Kleinberg award for Intercultural and Int. Relations prize in 1999.

Excellent and highly useful collection

While not your average bedtime reading, Collective Guilt is a fairly approachable survey of the behavior of groups when challenged with uncomfortable information--often resulting in nationalistic, circle-the-wagons and other reactions. Understanding how people react to this kind of information is extremely helpful when trying to implement change, as it helps you know what kinds of barriers you'll encounter and how much progress you can reasonably expect. For the creative, it might help find ways around these reactions as well. Great book.

About the Author
John Hajdu Heyer is Professor Emeritus at the University of Wisconsin, Whitewater. He began his exploration of French sacred music from the time of Louis XIV during his years as a student in Paris with Nadia Boulanger (1967-70). His publications include two books and five critical editions of works by Jean-Baptiste Lully and Jean Gilles. His work as a musicologist and conductor has twice been recognized with the Noah Greenberg Award from the American Musicological Society for 'distinguished contribution to the study and performance of early music'. He has served on the Council of the American Musicological Society, the editorial board for the Web Library of Seventeenth-Century Music, and was active on the committees preparing the collected works of Lully. In the past four years, he has undertaken extensive research in the archives and libraries of Southern France.

It traces the origins and growth of banking from the late sixteenth century to the 1720s through two generations of a scriveners' bank established in 1638 by Robert Abbott, and perpetuated by his nephew, Robert Clayton, and John Morris. After 1660 Clayton and Morris integrated mortgage security into banking practice. This study examines the elaborate stages of land assessment and legal change which enabled bankers to offer large-scale, long-term securities to their clients, a pattern followed later by other banks such as Childs, Hoares, Martins and Coutts.

Selim Deringil is Professor of History at Bo azici University in Istanbul, Turkey. He is the author of The Well-Protected Domains: Ideology and the Legitimation of Power in the Ottoman Empire, 1876 1909 (1999).

Margot Light is Professor of International Relations at the London School of Economics. She is co-editor (with A. J. R. Groom) of Contemporary International Relations: A Guide to Theory (1994) and co-author (with Neil Malcolm, Alex Pravda and Roy Allison) of International Factors in Russian Foreign Policy (1996).

At the outset of World War II, Turkey was a poor, underpopulated country, still recovering from the devastations of the previous World War and the following Greek invasion. Staying out of the war was vital. However, weak as the country was, the Turks were no master of their destiny. Moreover, the extreme strategic importance of the Bosporus made Turkey seem especially vulnerable. In this book, Selim Deringil shows how the Turks achieved in turning this disadvantage into their advantage.

At the dawn of World War II, Turkish leaders realized that laying low, hoping that the storm would pass (a 'passive' neutrality) would not work. Instead, they strived for good relations with all parties. Both Hitler and Churchill demanded an active military involvement of Turkey to their cause, but the Turks managed to keep them at bay with non-committal treaties of Mutual Assistance (with France and England, 1939) and of Friendship (with Hitler, 1941) while maintaining diplomatic and trade relations with both parties. By chosing with whom to trade chrome ore, the Turkish government had an extra trump card up their sleeve; this metal was strategically vital for Germany, since it was a critical element of high grade steel alloys - and Turkey was the only country who could provide the Nazis with chrome. During the war, the Turks proved themselves as masters in negociating their political and economic allegiences to their maximum benefit.

This 'active' neutrality, by which Turkey kept an intensive ongoing dialogue with both Nazis and Allies, demanded unique skills of Turkish diplomacy. With the characters of Ismet Inönü and Numan Menemencioglu, the Turks were up to the task. The Turkish government frequently drove both the German ambassador Von Papen and the English government circles around Anthony Eden to despair. Britain, who wanted to end the chrome exports to Germany, asked to buy all of the Turksh chrome but loathed Menemencioglu's "bazaar instincts" when the Turks tripled their price for the metal and made the British buy the chrome in large package deals including dried fruit. The Nazis were equally frustrated by the frequent Turkish refusals to fight Stalin and participate in their New World Order. Buth since neither the British or the Nazis dared to attack Turkey, fearful of the consequences of such an attack, the Turks maintained a maximum freedom of movement.

In less than 190 pages of text, Selim Deringil gives a very intelligent and highly readable account of this fascinating piece of Turkish and world history. The main historical figures really come to live. But this is not just diplomatic history, since the book also includes a very smooth analysis of the political and economic legacies of the Ottoman empire to the Turkey of Mustafa Kemal, and of the changes brought to Turkish politics by Ismet Inönü. Nor does it focus solely on Turkish relations with Hitler and Churchill; the Soviet side of the story is treated just as well. Highly recommended.

About the Author
Dr Lim gained industrial experience by working for Pfizer for five years in areas of reaction engineering and separation and purification. He taught for twenty-one years at Purdue University and initiated biochemical engineering research in 1970. He was recruited to the University of California, Irvine, where he was founding chair of biochemical engineering and chemical engineering for ten years and taught for twenty-two years. He has extensive consulting experiences with Leeds and Northrup, Novo Enzyme Corporation, Pharmacontrol Inc., Eli Lilly, Merck, Monsanto, LG Biotech Inc., CJ Biotechnology and Zander Renewable Resources. He studied bioreactions and bioreactor engineering, modeling, optimization and control of bioreactors, cellular regulation, recombinant DNA technology and bioremediation. Dr Lim has supervised more than 50 PhD theses and published more than 160 journal articles and 2 books. He received the Food, Pharmaceutical and Bioengineering Division Award of the AIChE for his work on bioreactor and enzyme engineering.

Dr Shin received formal education at Postech (Korea) and the University of California, Irvine. After postdoctoral positions at Irvine and the University of Michigan, he joined the Biological Engineering Department of Inha University, where he is currently the chair of the department. He studies the optimization and control of fed-batch fermentation, control of stem cells and neurons in micro-fluidic cell culture systems, and application of optimization theory to stem cells and neural tissues in defined macro and micro environments.
