About the Author
Michael I. Mishchenko is a Senior Scientist at the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York. He has published widely on electromagnetic scattering and remote sensing, including editing three contributory monographs, and is the first author of three books (including Multiple Scattering of Light by Particles, with Larry Travis and Andrew Lacis, Cambridge University Press, 2006). In other publishing work, he has been Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Quantitative Spectroscopy and Radiative Transfer and served previously as Topical Editor of Applied Optics. Dr Mishchenko is an elected Fellow of four major professional societies and has received many professional awards, including the Henry G. Houghton Award from the American Meteorological Society, two NASA Medals for Exceptional Scientific Achievement, and the Hendrik C. van de Hulst Award from Elsevier.

highly recommend it

Okay we followed this book for our lecture in thin films given by the first author of the book LB Freund, one of the best instructors i ever had. i will try not to be biased by his teaching skills while writing this review. i would say that its a must reference who are working in thin film area be it experimental or modeling. but i believe that you need to have a sound background atleast in continuum mechanics and elasticity to fully follow the mechanics (of deformation) part of the thin film on your own. the best thing i liked about this book is its methodical structure for e.g. deriving the basic Stoney's relation by minimizing the energy, then talk about its assumption in detail and then removing those assumptions one by one to make the relation more realistic (and offcourse more complicated). there are other things like material properties of common thin film materials used in microelectronics, topics on surface morphology etc. his writing style is very clear... again not for someone who doesnt have necessary background.

I like this book for it is a rather comprehensive treatment of the subject, and is written in a clear prose. However, one should realize that the focus is solely on the mechanical behavior of thin films, which could be attributed to the authors background and research interests.

Virtually, all properties of thin films (electronic, magnetic, optical, ferroelecrtic, multiferroic etc.) are affected if not chiefly governed by the elastic coupling of "order" parameters with strains and such, especially at nanoscopic length scales. This book is primarily devoted to mechanical behavior of thin films in an isolated fashion. For instance, misfit dislocation and critical thickness phenomena in thin films is treated with linear elasticity models, so much so that it is of limited use in thin films of multifunctional materials (ferromagnetics, ferroelectics, ferroelastics, multiferroics etc). However, the book by Freund and Suresh is an excellent introductory text from a mechanical behavior perspective. It develops all core concepts efficiently and thoroughly. And as such, it is of fundamental importance. I highly recommend it.

About the Author
Jason H. T. Bates is currently a Professor of Medicine and Molecular Physiology & Biophysics in the University of Vermont College of Medicine, and a Member of the Pulmonary Division at Fletcher Allen Health Care. He is also a member of the American Physiological Society, the American Thoracic Society, the Biomedical Engineering Society, and an elected senior member of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society. Dr Bates has published more than 190 peer-reviewed journal papers in addition to numerous book chapters, conference abstracts, and other articles. In 1994 he was awarded the Doctor of Science degree by Canterbury University, and in 2002 he was elected a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering.

Focusing on the lands beyond Castile, Professor Monter analyzes the activities of the Holy Office during an 'Aragonese Century' (1530-1630) when these frontier tribunals were its most active elements. This 'other' Spanish Inquisition virtually ignored converted Jews and their descendants, but brutally harassed Moriscos and immigrant workers from France; it executed nearly as many people for sodomy as for heresy. Despite opposition from local elites, the Inquisition performed many services for the king, sending thousands of heretics to the galleys and even capturing horse-smugglers along the Pyrenees. Frontiers of Heresy is based upon an immense variety of archival sources, and represents a significant reappraisal of one of the most important yet misunderstood institutions of early modern Europe.

George Lee Haskins (1915-1991) was Algernon Sydney Biddle Professor of Law at the University of Pennsylvania Law School. He wrote more than 80 articles and authored several books, including his magisterial Law and Authority in Early Massachusetts (1960). Earlier, Haskins authored Estates Arising from the Marriage Relationship and Their Characteristics (1952), The Growth of English Representative Government (1948), and The Statute of York and the Interest of the Commons (1935), and he co-authored the Pennsylvania Fiduciary Guide (1957).

Herbert A. Johnson is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Law at the University of South Carolina School of Law. Opened questions - no answers

The Emergence of Life by Pier Luigi Luisi is a thoughtful book. It is not a book where to find easy answers on how the life appeared on Earth. Rather, on the contrary. The author scholastic and erudition is impressive on subjects from fundamental physics and chemistry up to polictics and language. Luisi included topics as difficult to define as self-organization and emergence, not only in the biological and biochemical context, but also in social behaviour and economics, for example. The text is crystal-clear, based mostly on arguments from others, but also by the author's personal thinkings based on a life long scientific carreer (over 300 scientific publications), first at the ETH-Zurich (Switzerland) then at Rome 3 (Italy). The book is strongly based on scientific support and thoroughly referenced (over 500 scientific references, including papers of scientific journals and books), and includes an excellent subject index. Graphs and figures are of good support to understand the text. I really recommend it for readers interested on the non-trivial hypotheses of life arousal on Earth. A point (?): Luisi does not include any religious discussion in his book. I was very pleased with his well balanced way of thinking.

How could life emerge from unanimate matter? Despite the importance of this question and its broad public interest, the field of research in origin-of-life is relatively undermined in the scientific community. This field doesn't offer a promising carrier for a young scientist, mainly because of its slow development and the fact that it doesn't benefit from recent technical progress, as is the case with other fields,
Therefore, as a result of its small scientific community, contrasted by its large public issue and demand, many books have been published on this topic, a wide range of which present chapters written by the same authors. The results is a great redundancy of information as well as scientific views. If you've read half a dozen books on the origin-of-life and you're looking for something fresher, more vibrant, which presents a new outlook on the subject, then stop looking, this is the book for you!

Pier Luigi Luisi is a chemist who has devoted his scientific carrier to this important question in modern biology. As author of over 400 peer-reviewed publications, he has covered a great deal of various approaches to the origin of life, as well as a multitude of other books on fields directly related to the subject, such as "Giant Vesicles" and "Self-Production of Supramolecular Structures" (also found in Amazon).

Luisi's "The Emergence of Life" is a systematic overview of the field, as seen from an insider. Each part of the big picture, from prebiotic soup to the minimal cell, is thoroughly divided into single chapters and given a critical review, each time carefully pointing out the weakness of our current ideas on the various steps of life evolving from matter. I think even a creationist could greatly benefit from this book as it will give him/her a large variety of arguments to criticize the "non-Intelligent Design approach" to the Origin of Life ;)

Each chapter ends with a few questions for the reader, many of which have a charming balance between philosophy and chemistry put into one sentence. For example, the first question in chapter 5 (which covers the topic of "Self-organization") is:
"Do you accept the idea that self-organization in prebiotic times was the main driving force for the formation of the first living cells? (If not, what would you add to the picture?)"

While his approach leads to more general philosophical problems, Luisi doesn't dodge these topics, rather, he deals with each and every one with great care, as in the case of the importance of the theory of autopoiesis in understanding consciousness (for the author's competance in this field, I would like to mention another book he has recently written: "Mind and Life: Discussions with the Dalai Lama on the Nature of Reality", which just received a positive review in Nature). While most of the book deals with serious chemical problems, philosophical topics are dealt with delicately and in a highly constructed manner, resulting in a book with both a wide range of scientific information as well as an extensive overview of the highly philosophical, ethical nature of this field.

Synthetic Biology and Autopoiesis

In "The Emergence of Life", Pier Luigi Luisi gives an overview of synthetic biology, a field in which he has some 40+ years experience. In a sense this almost reads like a long review article, although Luisi's personal preferences and philosophy are presented most prominently. Luisi defines life on the basis of 'autopoeisis': "a system can be said to be living if it is able to transform external energy into an internal process of self-maintenance and production of its own components." Autopoeisis was a view of life first put forth by Chilean biologists Humberto Maturana and Francisco Varela in the 1970s. A main point of Luisi's account is that this view was regrettably ignored in favor of nucleic acid reductionism. Luisi is optimistic, however, that the current trend towards systems biology is reviving many of the views of the Chilean school. It is worth noting that Varela was heavily involved at the interface of biology and Buddhism, and it appears as though Luisi has been as well - which might be one reason why some biologists are reluctant to embrace the word 'autopoiesis', even if they agree with the fundamental tenets.

Given this perspective, the book is quite critical of reductionist RNA-world accounts of the origin of life. While self-replicating RNA molecules might sound elegant, as Luisi puts it "in fact, we simply do not know how to make long polypeptides by prebiotic means". Luisi is more favorable towards 'compartmentalist' studies of synthetic biology that focus on micelles, liposomes, and vesicles in an attempt to create a 'minimal cell'. Much of the book is an overview of the research that has been done in this regard. It is full of references, and if you are not particularly keen on learning such details you might find it somewhat dry.

One criticism I had of the book is that it is almost too synthetic in perspective. At many times I got the sense that the argument reduced to what is easier in the lab is a better explanation for the origin of life. Personally, I am not all that interested in these early attempts to create proto-life in the laboratory, and am not convinced that they can tell us all that much concerning the enormous parameter space that must have been available during the Earth's history. Basically, I don't feel that I learned all that much about the origin of life, rather than that it is quite difficult and enormously contentious.

A second minor criticism I have of this book is that it doesn't really do a great job in incorporating fields like physics and information theory. To give just one example, Luisi references Schrodinger's famous book 'What is Life?' but doesn't really talk about the negentropy ('free energy') view of life. This is too bad, as it would have provided a natural bridge between the chemistry and the higher level concepts of autopoeisis. In fact, I will note that neuroscientist Karl Friston has been leading a revival of sorts of Schrodinger 'free energy' view, and it has some pretty clear similarities to the autopoeisis account. This book doesn't get into the physics quite enough for my tastes - for example, I found the chapter on emergence a little weak. However, there is no doubting that Luisi's speciality, synthetic biology, is extensively covered.
