From the very first paragraph of the preface:

"We know that there is no such thing as a ‘neutral’ organization for a book such as this, indeed, none for any book. Any shaping of material implies (pre)conceptions about that material; every system stipulates an order, any order accepts some values and ignores others. Still, a book must be ordered, and its order should have a phrasable rationale."

Honestly, it's all you need to know. Any book organized on the grounds that there needs to be excuse-making for taking an opinionated stand is surely one whose opinions aren't terribly valuable. Many of the essays alternate wishy-washiness with unsubstantiated generalizations. The last four essays are genre surveys and are embarrassingly better than most of what preceded them, particularly Jill Levenson's Comedy and Robert Watson's Tragedy. I do not think they justify the purchase price.

Not very companionable

This is hardly the kind of companion I'd choose for a night out at the theater. Three of 10 chapters have something to say about a play: R.A. Foakes on "Playhouses and players," Margot Heinemann on "Political drama" and James Bulman on "Caroline drama."
The rest is either stuff that need never escape the academy, like Jill Levenson's endless carping about how English Renaissance comedies don't slip comfortably into any sort of rigorous classification system -- those dogs! -- or, much worse, the semi-comprehensible articles of the editors: A.R. Braunmiller on "The arts of the dramatist" and Michael Hattaway on "Drama and society."
Both editors are under the spell of ranid philosophy, with its expectable dire influence on coherence. I ran both essays through a Random Abstract Noun Generator analysis. The more nouns you can switch around without changing the meaning, the higher the score.
Neither scores as high as a typical sociological treatise, but they score high enough. Braunmiller spends nearly 40 pages to establish that people who paid their pennies to go into a playhouse understood that the play they were watching was a simulacrum, that they did not really imagine that while watching "Tamburlaine" they were in Damascus.
Robert N. Watson's essay on "Tragedy" does not score quite so high in a R.A.N.G. analysis but suffers from another ailment of po-mo lit. crit. -- science envy. This wasn't the place to bring in Godel's Incompleteness Theorem, especially since Watson does not understand that Godel's is not a general proposition but applies only to formal decidable systems, of which lit. crit. is not one.
Too bad, a lot has been unearthed and better understood about English drama since I studied it as an undergrad four decades ago. The bits and pieces collected here are not worth the time or the money.
Also, when did writers about English literature become turgid? Forty years ago, a good fraction of literary criticism was either nonsense or insignificant. But it was stylishly insignificant.
It does not help that some of the plays referenced here have not been reprinted in over a century, so unless you live near a very big library, you can hardly check it out. You will probably get more bang for your buck if you take the money you might spend on this book and use it to buy two tickets to a play and invite a charming member of the opposite sex to come.

About the Author
Jacky Bratton is Professor of Theatre and Cultural History at Royal Holloway, University of London. She is the author of New Readings in Theatre History (2003) and, with Ann Featherstone, The Victorian Clown (2006), which published previously unknown materials by Victorian comedians. In 2010 some of these stories were given a series of Radio 4 readings. She contributes to many radio and TV programmes about Victorian theatre.

About the Author
John P. Smol is a Professor in the Department of Biology at Queen's University, Ontario with a cross-appointment at the School of Environmental Studies. He is also co-director of the Paleoecological Environmental Assessment and Research Lab (PEARL). Since 1990, he has won over 25 research awards and fellowships, including the 2004 NSERC Herzberg Canada Gold Medal as Canada's top scientist or engineer.

Eugene F. Stoermer is a past-President of the Phycological Society of America and the International Association for Diatom Research. He worked at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor since 1965, where he is currently Professor Emeritus in the School of Natural Resources and Environment. He directed the 'phyto-lab', which undertook a wide variety of research topics, specialising in diatom systematics and ecology.

About the Author
Cynthia Carter Ching is Associate Professor of Learning and Mind Sciences at the University of California, Davis. Her research focuses on how people across the lifespan and within particular sociohistorical contexts make meaning with and about the technologies in their lives. In 2007 she won the American Educational Research Association's Division C Jan Hawkins Early Career Award for Humanistic Research and Scholarship in Learning Technologies for her study of digital photo journals in early childhood education. She has also served as an Associate Editor at The Journal of the Learning Sciences. Her work has appeared in Teachers College Record, Urban Education, The Journal of the Learning Sciences, Computers and Education, Early Education and Development, and E-learning and Digital Media. She has previously worked at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign and received her PhD from the University of California, Los Angeles.

Brian Foley is Associate Professor of Secondary Education at California State University, Northridge. His research focuses on the use of the Internet to support learning communities for students and teachers and the use of visualization in science education. This work includes studying communities of teachers as well as students. He explores how students in informal online environments such as Whyville.net create and define their community. Working with science teachers, Foley helped develop the Computer Supported Collaborative Science program, a model of teaching that takes advantage of cloud computing to enable a more collaborative science classroom. Foley completed his PhD at the University of California, Berkeley and has worked at the Caltech Precollege Science Initiative and the University of California, Irvine.

Not What I Was Expecting

Based on the book's title, I thought I would be getting a book on new media studies. Instead, this is a collection of mostly qualitative research conducted mostly by developmental psychologist. This is an entirely scholarly collection of the type of article normally seen in peer-reviewed journals.

This carefully curated books is divided into two Parts ("Authoring and Exploring Identity" and "Identities in Flux and in Play"), each with and introduction and four research-based chapters. Most of the research revolves around teenagers, though one study involved five- and six-year olds.

Because of the open-ended, exploratory research most of the scholars carried out, and because of the relatively small sample size of most of the studies, there is very little in the form of clear conclusions. Another issue is that most of the studies approached the subject matter through contrived (classroom and afterschool) experiences, instead of taking a more ethnographic approach to see how individuals construct their identities through the course of their normal, heavily digital lives. Nonetheless, for academics interested in this niche subject, this book represents a thorough and exhaustively documented resource.

Got in over my head with this one.

This is a very intense academic publication which reports detailed research on learning in conjunction with technology, development of identity in the digital world. Though I find the subject of interest, this text is specifically geared towards professionals, educators and students in related fields. I know the information I am looking for is in there however I have to admit I got in over my head trying to tackle this one. I wanted to learn something I could relate to children with disabilities doing photo or video journals and other media projects. I just don't have the background needed to get through the reading, it's not intended for the layperson.

Fantastic Resource

As an aspiring librarian who would like to work with digital media, I really enjoyed reading this book. Ching and Foley do a great job of including a wide range of topics concerning the self and digital/emerging technologies. My favorite chapter, and the most pertinent to my own research, is written by Alan Davis and Daniel Weinshenker, and looks at digital storytelling. While this is a diverse set of articles, they each share a focus on the relationship between young people and learning/development in digital environments. This would make a fantastic resource for researchers or anyone else interested in the field. Recommended!

About the Author
Sheri Berman is an Associate Professor of Political Science at Barnard College, Columbia University. She was previously Assistant Professor of Politics at Princeton University. She has held visiting positions at Göteborg University, Sweden and the Remarque Institute and the Center for European Studies at New York University. She has also been a fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. She is the author of The Social Democratic Moment (1997). She has written articles for top political science journals including Perspectives on Politics, World Politics and Comparative Politics as well as publications such as Foreign Affairs, Dissent, and World Policy Journal.

Excellent account of the background for the current social democracy. This is less historical and more theoretical than e.g. The Nordic Model of Social Democracy and a very nice introduction to this realm of ideas

A must for anybody interested in political economy

Berman argues that most of what we think about twentieth century politics is just wrong. Instead of seeing the chief ideological battle as one between democrats and totalitarians, or between capitalists and communists, she argues that the real struggle--or, better put, a crucial yet forgotten struggle--was about how to make capitalism and democracy mutually compatible.

Free markets don't only bring growth, she points out, but also bring instability, social dislocation, and other problems--problems that mass publics demand be solved. Older ideologies like classical liberalism or orthodox Marxism were unwilling to interfere with market operations, and so they got discredited when capitalism generated crises like the Great Depression. This paved the way for a battle between newer, more activist ideologies like fascism and social democracy, which were prepared to intervene in free markets as necessary to protect what they saw as society's interests. When fascism was defeated in WWII, social democracy was left standing as the only healthy and politically viable response to the problems of modern political economy.

Her argument is basically that "we're all social democrats now," even if we don't know it or acknowledge it, because pretty much everybody accepts the idea of combining some form of market-based economy with substantial government intervention to head off problems (the welfare state, countercyclical policies, etc. etc.). Yet only social democracy, she claims, has such an approach at its theoretical core, and so only social democrats really understand what they're doing and have a consistent approach to political economy.

She backs up this argument by tracing the debates over political economy in Europe from the late 19th century onward, showing how the earlier traditions foundered, how fascism and social democracy both emerged from revisionist Marxism, and how social democracy went from being an ideological outlier to being the core of the postwar settlement and contemporary policy. The book covers several countries over nearly a century of tumultuous history, but it's somehow beautifully written and very clear nevertheless.

Guaranteed to give American readers a new perspective on modern political economy, and explain to Europeans how they came to believe what they do. Highly recommended!

A wonderful overview of an important subject.

In the Primacy of Politics, Sheri Berman provides a historical overview of the development of three "third way" political systems in Europe in the early 20th century: Social Democracy, Fascism, and National Socialism (Nazism). She shows that all three systems shared something in common: an emphasis on what she terms "the primacy of politics" and the importance of communitarianism in the face of tumultuous social and economic changes. Each system appealed to all classes of society, and used nationalism to promote unity amongst the public and central economic planning to dull the rough edges of creative destruction. All were remarkably popular, yet only Social Democracy was able to maintain a commitment to human rights and universal suffrage, and avoided the irrationality and barbarity of the Fascist and Nazi regimes. With Europe once again facing troubling times, suffering from the ravages of neoliberalism and an unassimilated immigrant (see Immigrant Nations) population, Berman's suggestion to turn once again to Social Democracy could not be more timely.
