Such novels, attractive as they were to middle-class readers, were condemned by contemporary critics as dangerously seductive, crassly commercial, designed for the 'masses' and utterly unworthy of regard. Until recently, silver-fork novels have eluded serious consideration and been overshadowed by authors such as Jane Austen. They were influenced by Austen at their very deepest levels, but were paradoxically drummed out of history by the very canon-makers who were using Austen's name to establish their own legitimacy. This first modern full-length study of the silver-fork novel argues that these novels were in fact tools of persuasion, novels deliberately aimed at bringing the British middle classes into an alliance with an aristocratic program of political reform.

In juxtaposing actors' discourse on all sides of ongoing cases on issues such as expectations, needs, comprehensions of what plaintiffs seek from the legal system, objectives for resolving conflict at mediation, and perceptions of what occurs during attempts at case resolution, the findings reveal inherent problems with the core workings of the legal system. By providing in-depth views on the micro-elements of case processing, the book uncovers important issues about formal and informal justice, the inextricability of disputants' legal and often overriding extra-legal needs, and current paradigms relating to professional, lay, and gendered identities.
This book is unique in examining and understanding the workings of the legal system through juxtaposing lawyers', plaintiffs', defendants' and mediators' perceptions of litigation and mediation in ongoing litigated cases. This has not been done before, as access difficulties are immeasurable * The book adds to the paucity of in-depth empirical data from plaintiffs and defendants themselves on their motivations, perceptions and extra-legal agendas during litigation and mediation. About the Author
Tamara Relis is an Assistant Professor of Law at Touro Law School, New York and a Research Fellow in the Law Department of the London School of Economics and Political Science. Between 2005 and 2009, during the writing of this book, she was a postdoctoral research fellow at Columbia University Law School, New York. Dr Relis is the recipient of various awards for her doctoral and postdoctoral research, including those from the British Academy (postdoctoral research fellowship 2006-2009, and principal investigator on a project research grant), the Economic and Social Research Council (postdoctoral fellowship 2005-2006), and from Columbia University Provost's Office and the LSE (seed fund award). Dr Relis is currently working on her second book, Human Rights and Legal Pluralism: Theory, Global Standards, and Southern Actors' Practice based on empirical fieldwork research from 2005 to 2009 in eight states of India into formal courts and quasi-legal non-state justice regimes.

Great material but dense and difficult to get through

The information contained in this book is excellent. However, the author never uses a one syllable word when a longer one is available, and the academic precision of the writing gets in the way of the message. This material is often dense and difficult to understand. If you can, get past the introduction, which needs a translater, into the graphs and heart of the matters. This should have been written in plain language so that those who could most benefit from the information could access it. The rating is for how the information is conveyed, not for the information itself.

If you are learning economic for the first time this is a great place to start. As I look back on the different books I used to organize these concepts I wish I had used this book. The layout is easy to comprehend using the best of consumer choice and firm topics. The graphs and explanations are great even for someone that has already learned the material. Use this book in combination with a mathematical text like Simon and Blume and you will go far in undertanding Economics. I suggest this book for any advanced student as a place to make sure you really understand the basics of economics. Was a useful reference for graduate level study.

Applied Economics for living

Some of the readers of this book will end up teaching Economics to incoming college students or students in High School what it is that Economics with its graphs and jargon is all about.

The approach here is to remove all of the mystery from the graphs and jargon along with the hidden objectives of Economics. Everything is out in the open.

This is the book that they should, but don't use at both LSE and Oxford. The lucky students who get to use this book will have a much better chance of leaving with a knowledge of Economics that they will be able to use for themselves and to share with others.

Completely Readable Econ Textbook

To be completely fair, this review is probably a little biased since I've been digging through a terrible Statistics textbook recently.

The book does a really good job of explaining the concepts in a readable way - even the technical parts are cleanly described and are illustrated/explained very well with graphs. I feel like anybody who's willing to put in the work can actually learn the subjects presented simply by reading the book alone (unlike other textbooks where you have to dig through Google to get a basic understanding of what the author's trying to say). I might be completely wrong, but it seems like this book was written to actually teach the subject to anybody interested enough to learn it and not so much for peer approval.

I would highly recommend this - I'm not qualified enough to start trashing the content of the book on its validity - but assuming that the content is correct, this is a great book to learn it from.

About the Author
Peter K. Smith is Professor of Psychology and Head of the Unit for School and Family Studies at Goldsmiths College, University of London. He is the editor of Violence in Schools: The Response in Europe (2003) and co-editor of several other books on bullying in schools including The Nature of School Bullying: A Cross-National Perspective (1999).

Debra Pepler is Professor of Psychology at York University, Toronto, Canada and Senior Research Associate at the Hospital for Sick Children. She is co-editor of The Development and Treatment of Childhood Aggression and the recent volume, The Development and Treatment of Girlhood Aggression.

Ken Rigby is Adjunct Associate Professor of Social Psychology at the School of Education, University of South Australia. He is the author of Bullying in Schools and What to Do About It (1997), Stop the Bullying: a Handbook for Schools (2001) and New Perspectives on Bullying (2002).

Dániel Apai is an Assistant Astronomer at the Space Telescope Science Institute. His research focuses on the observational characterization of the origins and properties of extrasolar planets and planetary systems.

Dante Lauretta is an Associate Professor of Planetary Science and Cosmochemistry at the University of Arizona's Lunar and Planetary Laboratory. His research interests include the chemistry and mineralogy of asteroids and comets as determined by in situ laboratory analysis and spacecraft observations.

Great review of planet formation for graduate students/researchers

Great review of the different stages of planet formation from many of the top experts in the field. This book includes both the astronomical and the meteoritical constraints and links them, which is very unusual (most other books on planet formation only focus on the astronomical observations/models).
The book's level is suitable for graduate students and researchers.

About the Author
Woodruff Sullivan is Professor of Astronomy and Adjunct Professor of History at the University of Washington (UW). His interests are in astrobiology, the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI), the history of astronomy, and gnomonics. He is Chair of the Steering Group of the UW's interdisciplinary graduate Astrobiology Program.

John Baross is a professor in the School of Oceanography, UW. His research focuses on thermophilic micro-organisms from volcanic environments, the origin and evolution of life, life on other planets and moons, and microbial ecology. He is a founding member of UW's Astrobiology Program.
