"Though the writing is crisp, and the explanations lucid, this is not an easy book to read. The difficulty lies in the density of ideas presented. The rewards of persevering are definitely worth it, though. In fact, once immersed, I started to ponder where this material would lead to: which algorithms could be even further generalized, what would many of these algorithms look like if implemented in Coq or Agda, and so forth. This is the effect that all good books have on me: well-presented and well-motivated material strives to become a stepping stone to further discovery. Any serious computer scientist would benefit from reading and properly understanding this book.

A Warning on the Kindle Edition

While this appears to be an excellent text, the author uses a number of mathematical symbols which are not rendered correctly in the Kindle edition. They are sometimes rendered with a question mark or a rectangular box. This can make the derivations difficult to follow. Since this book is also somewhat expensive for a Kindle edition, if you can afford it, you should probably go for the paper version (assuming the paper version is typeset correctly).

A book for someone who wants to think

Bird has written a fine book, the functional analogue to Bentley's fine pieces. If there is one thing that's common to the functional attitude in program design, it's an emphasis on proof and logical consistency. Bird goes into detail and carefully shows why algorithms perform, and what their costs must be in terms of time and space complexity.
One quibble: the reader, to follow the arguments, will want to write the short code selections for himself, to check Bird's arguments; he'll find himself having to define a number of Unicode mathematical operators, like
U-2209, for example. But this isn't hard to do, in Haskell.
Each chapter is well-written, to the point, and closely argued. In showing the beauty of Haskell in a clear way, or showing the beauty of concrete maths in a clear way, Bird has done well.

Good learning but I would have liked more themes to hold it together

Each chapter presents a problem, a simple approach to a solution, and then shows how that simple approach can be brought all the way to implementation, using a functional programming style. There are a few things happening in this book. The author's goal to teach you to believe in the morphing properties of functional programming. In effect, he is saying: do not optimize early, express and implement your algorithm sequentially, and you will see that the implementation can be changed (refactored) to meet performance and memory usage needs. To support this mission the book presents and implements a hodgepodge of algorithms, I say hodgepodge because they do not share a common theme. Finally, the book stays within a "first order of complexity" domain: the algorithms stay focused on the problem they are solving, there are no "higher order abstractions" (e.g. monads, arrows).

The lack of algorithmic or higher order theme of this book did bug me. And I would have been tempted to count this against it. Yet not long after having read much of this book, I was working with a list that I knew would no scale, hesitating to refactor it, I was happy leave it unchanged, feeling confident that I would be able to deal with it later. Part of that confidence was supported by the knowledge that that type of transformation is what this book does successfully, chapter after chapter.

Crystal, a linguist, is the compiler of many reference books published by Cambridge, for example, The Cambridge Encyclopedia of Language (1987).

Throughout the book (which focuses on British English, not American English), readers will find liberal use of color in the many charts, illustrations, reprints of pages from historically significant works, maps, and photographs. The author does not shrink from exploring and delivering opinions on controversial topics such as the "opaque inspecific, or empty" language of politics and the dangers of "political correctness."

Great book!

I'm not a scholar, linguist, or anyone special. Just someone who finds dialects interesting and picked this book up on a whim and WOW! This is just a great book. It's fun to read and just darned fascinating. I'm so thankful I picked it out.

An excellent help for all interested in English language!

I'm a student of the Department of English Studies in Poland and I found the book a great help; everything's explained accurately and clearly, and the general layout is so neat that it's a pleasure to read the book! Of course, the book will be extremely helpful mostly for people really interestd in the English linguistics and similar topics closely connected with English language. Personally, I find the book just GREAT; it met my expectations and it's one of the most precious books in my whole library! RECOMMENDED!!!!

A broad look at the English Language - great articles and amply illustrated

We use English everyday. We even studied spelling and grammar in school (maybe not as much as we should have studied). However, most of us do not know the origins of the language, how it has changed over the centuries, or its variants around the globe. Today, English is used by more people in India than in the United Kingdom and the United States combined. So, whose English is authoritative and why? I am not saying it is not the Queen's English that is not the standard of our language, I am just pointing out that there is room for discussion and reconsideration.

David Crystal has provided an amply illustrated journey through English that begins with considerations of what a model of English might look like and then takes us through a fascinating history of our language from the Old English through today's World English. Part II provides five chapters on the vocabulary and lexicon of English. Part III tackles the knotty problem of English grammar. Part IV discusses spoken and written English, Part V talks about the varieties of using English by region, societal variation, and even personal variation. Part VI talks about learning and studying English. The appendices are full of useful information such as a glossary, references, further reading list, index, and so forth.

The book is worth having just for the concise history it provides the English language, but the other discussions are worth knowing about and considering the various points of view the author provides us. As always, it is not necessary to agree with everything provided by a scholar to benefit from what he provides us. Just wrestling with the ideas and clarifying why you disagree with this or that point, or digging deeper to gain a richer understanding than the author provides are certainly worthwhile benefits to be gained.

An excellent read and reference for your bookshelf.

Warren C. Trenchard is Professor of New Testament and Early Christian Literature at La Sierra University, Riverside, California. He is author of the highly successful The Student's Complete Vocabulary Guide to the Greek New Testament and its second edition entitled Complete Vocabulary Guide to the Greek New Testament (1993, 1998 Zondervan).

The better (albeit more expensive) of two modern dictionaries.

New Testament Greek dictionaries come in two very different flavors. On the one hand, there are the huge, multi-volume theological dictionaries, generally translated from German, the language of the very largest community of New Testament scholars. On the other, there is the thin, almost pocket-sized dictionary of only those Greek words which appeared in the New Testament, with only the scantest lexicological information. I have used two of these. First, the lovely leather-bound dictionary by Barclay M. Newman, Jr. and published by the United Bible Societies. The second, slightly larger volume published by the Cambridge University Press, is prepared by Warren C. Trenchard.
Both books are dedicated exclusively to Greek to English, giving all Greek words in the original Greek script we encountered when we studied college math. As someone with aging eyes, I can say that both are easy to read without extra magnification. If I were to give the edge to either, I suspect the slimmer Newman dictionary may be infinitesimally clearer.
Both books have virtually identical coverage of words, with Trenchard having more words on a page and fewer pages, while Newman's pages are thinner, with a correspondingly higher risk of skipping over or tearing pages. The lexical information provided on all words is very similar; however Trenchard gives better information on the parts of speech and tenses of verb forms.
Neither book offers any assistance with Greek grammar. I am quite surprised also that neither book even has a copy of the Greek alphabet in the book. Both books also offer occasional references to passages in the NT to help understand a word's context, but this is only with about 20% of the words in Newman and about 35% of the words in Trenchard.
The one great difference between the two dictionaries lies in Trenchard's providing a count of the number of times each word appears in the NT. This is a small but valuable asset, as when I tried to find a word in one of the mammoth theological dictionaries, and discovered that it occurs but twice in the NT, giving me some reassurance that in the greater scheme of things, this word is relatively unimportant. So, if I were going on a trip, I would pack the attractive and thin Newman, but use the more informative Trenchard for day to day work.

One of the handiest tools for readers and translators of the Greek New Testament

Warren Trenchard has performed a great service for readers of the Greek New Testament with this slim but comprehensive volume. Trenchard includes every word that occurs in the Greek NT and provides multiple definitions for many words, lists cognate words, identifies the part of speech, and lists the principal parts of each verb; in addition, he also provides common idioms that are encountered in the GNT among the word definitions. You can't ask much more from a 177-page paperback. No, this will by no means replace BDAG and it doesn't aspire to do so; BDAG is much more comprehensive and cites many more examples. However, Trenchard's slender volume is much more convenient to take along wherever you go and the information it gives you will suffice until you can consult BDAG or TDNT for the full scope of a word.

Excellent little dictionary

This is absolutely an excellent little dictionary. It is convenient because of its size, and the type-set is easy to read. Trenchard gives brief definitions of every word in the New Testament, as well as idiomatic expressions. He also lists odd word forms for verbs, and generally lists the aorist and perfect tense forms after the present tense before he provides a definition. I highly recommend this book for beginning students over the bigger and more unwieldy BADG. This book should also be useful for intermediate and advanced students as a quick reference dictionary.

About the Author
C. Gregory Knight is a Professor of Geography and Professor of International Environmental Affairs at the Pennsylvania State University. He joined the faculty of Penn State in 1971, where he has served as a geography professor and department head, as well as Vice Provost and professor of international environmental affairs in the School of International Affairs. His work on resource management includes development in Africa, energy management in the United States, and global climate change impacts on water resources. He was founding director of the National Science Foundation-funded Center for Integrated Regional Assessment, and is an honorary member and consultant to the Scientific Coordinating Center for Global Change in the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.

Jill Jäger has worked as a consultant on energy, environment, and climate for numerous national and international organizations and has an extensive publication record. She was Deputy Director of the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (1994-1998) and Executive Director of the International Human Dimensions Programme on Global Environmental Change (1999-2002). She was a member of the Core Group of the EU-funded MATISSE (Methods and Tools for Integrated Sustainability Assessment) project (2005-2008).

Thorough and Enlightening

The nineteen essays in this collection approach Cicero from a variety of perspectives. Cicero's life, work, thought, and influence are all discussed by experts in the field. After reading Anthony Everitt's biography of Cicero, I consulted this work to fill in gaps that Everitt left open and to gain a more thorough understanding of Cicero's writings. I found exactly what I needed here and more. The further reading section at the end of each essay provide a wealth of material to explore for those few readers who may still have questions after absorbing this excellent volume.

Anglican Tradition and Identity

He reveals the tension between tradition and adaptation and examines the Anglican 'search for secure identity' in many contexts, and revisits Anglo-catholic and Protestant debate. Great sources & index. He cites women's ordination and/or gays as a cause for the church's fragmentation and 'loss of coherence'; and says modernity has not provided resolution. These historical shifts in circumstance and belief could be more energetically and imaginatively examined in a future volume.

Clear and Thought-Provoking Gems from QM Master

It is a travesty that this book is out of print. Almost unbelievable, in fact. What is Cambridge University Press thinking?
This book is not destined to become a classic-- because It IS a classic ALREADY!! It is just one that hasn't been widely recognized yet.
That's only a matter of time.
Nowadays everyone and their uncle seems to be talking about Quantum Communication this and Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen that-- and I guess with good reason, for we are now starting to see practical applications of this most esoteric of physics subfields.
However, it seems that the more non-intuitve and interesting a topic is, the more obfuscation (both intended and accidental) is written about it. (I'm not just talking about laymen and mystics, but physicists too!) Or, said another way, the more people talk, the less they really understand.
Forget all the rest of the [stuff] out there. Cut to chase. Read about the ESSENTIALS of what QUANTUM MECAHNICS really MEANS from one of the Masters of the field in about 15 short, lucid, crystal-clear essays.
There is some math here, but not much. That is the beauty and the danger of Quantum Mechanics-- because calculations are not that difficult in this field, people are lulled into thinking they really understand what it is they are calculating.
Well, most don't.
If you really want to get a grasp as to what it all MEANS-- forgetting the calculations for a moment--- you must read this book.
Feynman said that nobody really understood Quantum Mechanics. That may be so...
But John Stuart Bell came the closest.
You can't meet him at a conference anymore (he died in 1990,) but you CAN have him tutor you personally in this short, brilliant masterpiece.

Does the world run on psychokinesis?

Any book that seems likely to stand as the most representative piece in one of science's greatest missteps deserves a five-star recommendation and should be widely read; this is how science progresses. Papers by E. T. Jaynes, A. F. Kracklauer, and C. S. Unnikrishnan have been published that not only seem to expose gaps in Bell's arguments, but even (in the case of Unnikrishnan) go so far as to show _how_ to get the same results as quantum mechanics but using only local information.
We may be standing on the cusp of a revolution in physics. Here are some important papers to read along with Bell, all of which are published on-line and elsewhere (get out your search engines):
C. S. Unnikrishnan: "Quantum correlations from wave-particle unity and locality: Resolution of the EPR puzzle" in the Annales de la Fondation Louis de Broglie, vol. 25 no. 3, 2000

Excellent, and no caveat....

You can see from the other reviews here that this is a fascinating book. Many of the essays discuss 'unorthodox' interpretations of QM like Bohmian mechanics and wave-collapse models. The introduction by Alain Aspect was very interesting as well, and discussed the experimental advances in what he calls the "second quantum revolution." If you are buying an older edition of this book you may not get this introduction.

The previous review "Small Caveat" is a little misleading. Bell does explain that if the spaceships are accelerating slowly enough, the tension in the string will cause the system to contract as a whole, and the string will not break. But if the spaceships maintain a constant distance apart in the frame of the observer, the string will most certainly break. If you don't accept Bell's main argument that the electric fields between the atoms contract, transform to the accelerated frame of one of the ships and you will find the other ship receding away.

But don't listen to me, read the essays yourself! Even if you don't agree with the arguments, you will not be sorry for the thought provoking experience.

Brilliant and accessible

Don't take my word for it, though; read the book online. For some reason Amazon decided to delete the URL, so just do a search for David Barber and go to his home page at UCL (University College London), where links to a PDF of the book and to recent publications of his can be found.

Barber has done an excellent job of making extremely complex and contemporary ideas accessible to anyone with a reasonable mathematical background, and he puts them in context ("these techniques can be applied to finance, biology, and speech recognition"... para). Read through it and see for yourself. I find this book more accessible than Daphne Koller & Nir Friedman's (also excellent) text, Probabilistic Graphical Models, despite my immense respect for the authors of the latter.

Extremely Suitable for Self Study

Unlike many (most?) books and courses on machine learning, Barber's outstanding text is very suitable for self study. There are many reasons for this, and high among them is the fact that he carefully explains, with commonsense examples and applications, many of the tougher logical, mathematical and processing foundations of pattern recognition.

For relative beginners, Bayesian techniques began in the 1700s to model how a degree of belief should be modified to account for new evidence. The techniques and formulas were largely discounted and ignored until the modern era of computing, pattern recognition and AI, now machine learning. The formula answers how the probabilities of two events are related when represented inversely, and more broadly, gives a precise mathematical model for the inference process itself (under uncertainty), where deductive reasoning and logic becomes a subset (under certainty, or when values can resolve to 0/1 or true/false, yes/no etc. In "odds" terms (useful in many fields including optimal expected utility functions in decision theory), posterior odds = prior odds * the Bayes Factor.

For context, I'm the lead scientist at IABOK dot org-- we design algorithms for huge data mining problems and applications. This text is our "go to" reference for programmers not up to speed in many of the new pattern recognition algorithms, including those writing new versions. All the most recent relevant models, from a probability standpoint, are represented here, with a clarity that is stunning. My only criticism (a mild one) is that, when applying Barber's examples to Bodies of Knowledge and data mining, he skips Prolog, backward chaining, predicate calculus and other techniques that are the foundation of automated inference systems (systems that extend knowledge bases automatically by checking whether new propositions can be inferred from the KB as consistent, relevant, etc.).

In the next 20 years, algorithms will rule this planet. If you either want to see the future of your grandkids, or participate in it if you're young, this is a MUST HAVE exploration of where what we used to call AI is now headed. There IS plenty of calculus in this volume, so don't mistakenly think it is "simple" -- but if you put the time in, you can "get it" even if you're a bright undergrad level thinker. The author's goal of training new algorithm programmers is laudable and right on point for where pattern recognition is headed.

With this amount of math, how can we star it high for self study? Easy: unlike most "recipe" books that just give bushels of codes or techniques, the authors here give the what, where when and why of both code and math, not just the how, as their goal is independent, creative contributors who can write their OWN algorithms. There are a few minor UK vs US differences in terminology also (event space instead of sample space, for example), but they expand the reader's horizon rather than distract or annoy as some others do. There are others like Bishop and many more that have more recipes, and more compact and difficult math, but you have to either be really good (just show me the recipe) or really bad (I don't know what I'm doing, but can follow this recipe) to benefit from them. This is a happy middle ground that does not disappoint.

Great effort put in explanations and examples

First I would like to thank authors (and the publishing house) for giving free PDF of the complete book. That's a really kind of them. Knowing its contents, that motivated me to buy a hard copy for my library.

Now to the content. The author has done a great job in introducing probabilistic concepts and pushing forward to more advanced and practically interesting techniques. There are many examples in the text that often help to grasp the workings of a method or an approach.

For me who has very little background in probabilistic methods this is a real textbook. I am still reading it chapter by chapter and can recommend it as a reading for advanced undergraduate, graduate and pHD students. The material in each chapter is well introduced and motivated, equations are just in time with variables and transformations explained, and with numerous exercises at the end of each chapter. All this makes a book almost self-consistent onto at least a semester can be taught.

The book is also accompanied with MATLAB code to which author refers to at the end of each chapter. The code is organized as a toolbox of functions with demos for each chapter. This allows to apply the acquired knowledge on your own problems.

As of the moment of writing, I've found just few typos that were not that disturbing. I don't see any other more serious reason not to give solid 5 stars to this book.
