Excellent treatment of the subject

Patrick Amory's book provides a fresh and truely revealing insight into the questions of ethnicity, identity and perception in Ostrogothic Italy. Amory's books stands in stark contrast to the 'tribal history' of the Goths written by Herwig Wolfram. Amory demonstrates the complexity of identities and paints a picture of this period that is appealing and intuitively plausible.

the starting of a normal society

New South Wales colony was the original British colony in Australia, and several books have already been written about its beginnings. But this text offers a fresh and different perspective. The author explains how Sydney started as a colony where often the permanent residents were convicts who had served their sentences but were forbidden to return to Mother Britain. Under such circumstances, the prospects for a normal society seemed dim indeed.

Yet in those early decades, through the local courts and local case law, the backbone of such a society emerged. Probably helped by the fact that most of the convicts were not homicidal maniacs. Those would have been already hung in Britain, instead of being transported to Sydney. Most convicts had committed fairly minor infractions, that were severely punished by British law, which was mostly to protect the upper classes.

A basic introduction for BMET's

I believe Introduction to Biomedical Instrumentation: The Technology of Patient Care is a basic book at the introductory level for Biomed Techs. If you are a new Tech you will get much out of this book. It is well written and easy to read and contains sufficent information to help you come to grips with the complexities of Medical Technology. I'm always looking for a respected source of information for my new staff - this book will find a role as a first handout to new staff in any Biomed Dept.

You will need to be aware that it has much specific information on codes and standards and issues specific to USA but it also has lots of information that will be useful to other countries (e.g. Australia).

If you are a Graduate or Professional Engineer, you will need more detail and depth. I suggest Khandpur Biomedical Instrumentation: Technology and Applications or Carr and Brown Introduction to Biomedical Equipment Technology (4th Edition) as alternatives for undergrads or recent graduates.

Good at what it is but limited to BMET newbies.

Excellent book for entry level BMETs

This book as the author states is intended for BMET students and entry level techs. It introduces the audience to the position of the BMET, the field, and the technology that is being used in each hospital setting without any complexity. I'm a rookie BMET, and I found this book to be an outstanding source to prepare me to excel in my job and enhance my knowledge.

An interesting introductory reading for students and prospects in Biomedical Engineering Technology

I like how Barbara Christe introduce the reader into the biomedical equipment environment, the book is not that complex of others like Carr & Brown or Khandpur but for biomedical equipment technicians (BMET) it works. However for next editions I will recommended color images, more information in electrical safety test equipment, it also could have new chapters with introductory information on medical terminology, anatomy & physiology, electronics and information technology (IT) and last consider translations in other languages like Spanish.

The end of violence.

This book of Mr. Staub is just impressive. It explains how, depending on the education you give the children of your country, they will become 'blind' patriots or 'constructive' patriots. It explains how you can propagate goodness in society and how you can detect and stop evilness. If there is a treaty in this world that gives the clues to stop terrorism, nazism, and any act of undesired violence, but also how to heal wounds between different groups who were enemies in the past and from there build a new caring, loving, friendly society, it is this book of Mr. Staub. Just impressive : Probably few men like Mr. Staub in this world have done so much for peace to appear and propagate between human beings.

I would not have liked it then because it would not have been from ...

Right away one can sense the writer is speaking from the point of view of belief in god. That is not very objective. Plus, as a former Christian believer, I would not have liked it then because it would not have been from the point of view of belief in Christianity. The writer is or was a Jew. Perhaps such a work is not possible to escape any writers' bias and therefore impossible to write for anyone. I at least can applaud the effort although I didn't personally find it helpful.

A Classic Study of WW II North Africa

If you're interested in the WWII Western Desert campaign you'll love this book. I own many of the classic books on the subject...from Corelli Barnett's- "The Desert Generals" to Agar-Hamilton's- "Sidi Rezigh Battles" and "Crisis in the Desert"...and I'm always looking for new ones. In my opinion, Martin Kitchen's- "Rommel's Desert War" ranks right up there with this subject's classic works. "Rommel's Desert War" is well researched and written, very readable...in fact hard to put down, full of little known facts attesting to the author's research, and supplemented by good maps and interesting photographs. The Axis perspective in this campaign has never been so clearly detailed to the reader. Yes, from the quality of the paper (you won't believe how heavy this little gem is) to the quality of the scholarship this is a first rate book. There are good researchers and good writers but only a few historians are able to meld the two disciplines into an enjoyable and illuminating read. Martin Kitchen is one of the few and should be proud!

Excellent Overview

This book is an excellent overview of Rommel's North African campaign but it also emphasizes the higher elements of command from mainly the Italian and German leadership perspective. Thus it may not satisfy those looking for a book that gives more in-depth descriptions of what warfare was like as experienced by individual infantrymen or tank commanders. For that I recommend Holland's Together We Stand. Instead this book discusses and describes the planning and implimentation of military operations across the desert and especially the internal conflicts between the more agressive ambitious Rommel and those in both the Italian and German High Commands who prefered Rommel engage in more of a holding campaign rather than striking for the Suez Canal. The discussions of the critical battles are probably adequate for most readers but those expecting a more detailed operational account may find the author too sketchy or incomplete and the maps also omit some of the finer details. This is especially true concerning Operation Crusader.

This book is also partly revisionist in that its portrayal of Rommel is considerably more negative than most other books on this topic. The author concedes Rommel is a far superior tactician, especially compared to his British opponents, but also considers him vainglorious, callous toward his men, reckless, arrogant, and prone to blame and even punish others for his mistakes. From a military perspective, Rommel's tendency to ignore the logistical impossibilities and subsequent futility of his military goals contributed to his final defeat thus making his earlier victories much in vain. Perhaps the North African Campaign indeed verifies the comment among the German High Command that Rommel was an excellent divisional commander but no more than that.

Other strengths of the book include a more in-depth discussion of the Italian Command structure while also providing a respectable analyses of the logistical problems involved with the North African Campaign. Finally, while this book can be considered scholarly, the author's writing style still keeps the topic interesting. Overall I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in WW2.

Rommel-bashing....

This is a nice book on the campaign in North Africa. While not providing any sensational new info, much of the relevant info is here put into context. It details not only the fighting itself, but also how the political decisions made in Rome and Berlin influenced the campaign.
It does, however, have some serious drawbacks.

While most contemporary students of the North African campaign agree that Rommel was a highly controversial military leader with as many flaws as virtues, this book really takes it a step further, too far in my opinion.
Indeed, the focus seems to be "Rommel-bashing", using every available negative scrap of info against him, only grudgingly admitting that he had some strengths as well, usually only as he was forced on the defensive in the later part of the campaign.
In addition, it even claims that Rommel never wrote about feelings when writing to his wife, while allegedly enjoying nude swimming with younger officers...

(To be fair, the book is also highly critical of the British leadership)

The work has some minor factual mistakes, while not serious, they are irritating. My guess is that the author is well conversant with the political and strategic game, while lacking the insight and knowledge of the military details.

The word panzer is used ad nauseam, and while it is true that Panzer is the correct plural form in German, it would be more correct to write panzers when writing in English and describing several vehicles. Details...

It could also have had a slightly better layout, as it can be a bit tedious and unstructured at times, and the coverage tapers off after El Alamein, almost as if caused by lack of space or writing stamina.

While the supply situation determined the eventual outcome of the campaign, this was not decided at sea.
Occasionally the British effort to strangle the supply lifeline would succeed, but only temporarily. The real flaw was the lack of capacity in the African ports (even if operating at full capacity, disregarding enemy attacks and interruptions, they could never attain the level needed to support the entire army).
Furthermore, offloaded supplies accumulated in the ports due to a lack of land transport to the front. This is mentioned briefly, but still too much emphasis is placed on Malta and the Brits hindering the flow of supplies.

I would hesitate to recommend this work to a novice student of the campaign. When read with a critical eye and together with other more detailed books on the topic, it can be a nice addition.

PS. Can authors please stop repeating the old propaganda lie that the Germans had to heat the armor plating of a Panzer with a blowtorch in order to fry an egg on it..? Obviously, they have never been in the desert..

No annotations on each page

My problem with the Kindle Bantam Classic edition of Othello is that there are no footnotes at the bottom of each page. This means no immediate vocab definitions or comprehension aids. I bought the Kindle edition because my old Signet paperback Othello is yellow with age, plus tiny font. (I'm rereading Othello before watching the live performance starring Blair Underwood and Richard Thomas.) Not being a scholar of Elizabethan English, I do need annotative help with the vocab and idioms. So unfortunately, it's back to the old, barely readable but annotated Signet print version for me.

THIS IS AMAZING

Why no 5 stars? This is the best purchase of my college career. Better than sparknotes and way better than the original old english version that makes no sense and is miserable to read.

I bought this for my Shakespeare class. Hell no I am not reading the original edition in hard to read language. This has a simple version next to it in PLAIN english so I can comprehend what the story is actually about instead of dozing off as i take in zero. It made me appreciate Shakespeare and enjoy this story. I used it for a college class (non-english majors) and I passed all quizzes and was able to discuss what happened and identify quotes. PLUS there is the original version on the page next to it. When the teacher asked what we thought the line meant I always had the answer.

This makes me ENJOY the story, PASS the class and save TIME. Get this series for each adn every shakespear book.

Great play, great electronic version

Othello was one of the first plays I was exposed to when I was younger. It has murder, suicide, intrigue and things that would get a teenager into Shakespeare.

I've had mixed success with some of the free Kindle versions of Shakespeare. Some have been good, some have been awful. This is an exceptional version. It's formatted nicely and is easy to read. The only "lack" is that it is without line numbers, so if you were to use this for academic reasons, you might have an issue or two.

Thus far, Othello's my favorite free Shakespeare play. I missed how much of a jerk Iago was, and all the deception that lead to Othello killing Desdemona.

decent book (and discount that creationist review)

First, to actually say something about this book, it's a solid and comprehensive look at a burgeoning field. The use of radiogenic isotopes as geochemical tracers and for age determinations of various sorts is now a crucial component of studies of all parts of the Earth system. Inevitably, a single text that tries to cover such a diverse suite of rapidly developing subdisciplines will run into some glitches and not be completely current, but Dickin has provided a very good starting point for an advanced undergraduate or graduate course in isotope geochemistry and/or geochronology. This book is just about the only survey text available, and fortunately, it's good.
A second point: the "review" posted by the 'reader from Washington State' is a dogmatic creationist screed that doesn't address the content of the book and gets the story of the Jack Hills zircons wrong. The comments by this person could be taken as the type example of a little knowledge being a dangerous thing. For those that are really interested, I suggest that they look at the original papers involved in the controversy. For those that are just skimming this site, let me point out that the "rock unit" that was dated at Jack Hills is a sandstone, so of course the zircons showed a "confusion of information" because they were derived from all manner of different parent rocks by erosion! If you want to understand the complexities and nuances of geochronology, and learn how these very different techniques are used for purposes like characterizing geochemical reservoirs, determining the temperature history of rocks, and --yes-- determining the absolute age of rock units, read Dickin's book, and only then visit the creation science sites for a hoot.

The content was there but the form for the saturating exponential had an incorrect sign. That just really bugged me as it was repeated in many places in the book.

You Don't Need a Math Degree to Understand this

Chaos is such a visually stunning field of study, since you invariably run into those computer generated figures of Julia sets or random fractal landscapes or cloud formations.
But can we get a rigorous, first principles explanation that is broadly accessible to undergraduates with good, but not advanced math preparation? Well, you might consider this recent book. The authors have gone to some length to explain events without appealing to more than simple calculus.
Nothing flashy. But you can obtain a good understanding of fractal dimensions, self iterating systems (like a Sierpinski gasket) and noise.

An interesting approach

Firstly, this is one of those rare technical books which one can thoroughly enjoy. It can be read at a number of levels and rewards any effort put into understanding the concepts and the mathematics. One needs decent calculus, basic set theory and a bit of topology to wade through the maths. The text and diagrams are clear and unambiguous. The fonts and layout are well chosen for easy reading, always an important consideration for technical books. As this is a text book for a course in elementary chaos theory, the authors write out the proofs fully, in an almost bullet point fashion which makes it very easy to follow the argumentation. I like this style very much.

What I don't like is the lack of solutions (preferably worked solutions) to the excellent exercises at the end of each topic. This is one of my major bugbears about textbooks. Without worked solutions one simply cannot get the feedback required for a full understanding of the subject. Not everyone who buys the book will be attending classes and they will never know if they are on track or not. To make me even crankier, the authors will provide worked solutions to "bona fide" teachers who contact them. How about letting teachers, bona fide or otherwise, write their own exercises instead of taking the easy way out, and letting students learn using the well accepted techniques of feedback and reinforcement.
