About the Author
Wendy Hunter is Associate Professor of Government at the University of Texas, Austin. Her early work focused on Latin American militaries during the transition from authoritarian rule. A second phase of her research career was devoted to social policy decision making and human capital formation in Latin America. More recently, she has been engaged in understanding the growth and transformation of the Workers' Party in Brazil from 1989 until the present. She is the author of Eroding Military Influence in Brazil, and her articles have appeared in Comparative Politics, Comparative Political Studies, Political Science Quarterly, the American Political Science Review, the American Journal of Political Science, the Journal of Democracy and World Politics. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley.

This is the first comprehensive account of the development of the ideas on gender of Jacob Boehme (1575-1624) among his English followers, tracing the changes in gender and sexuality in such esoteric traditions as alchemy, hermeticism and the Cabala. The book argues that Behmenist thought in these areas is a neglected aspect of the revision in the moral status of women during the early modern period, contributing significantly to the rise of the Romantic notion of womanhood and 'Victorian' sexual ideology. It deals with English Behmenism from its reception during the Interregnum through to its impact upon William Blake and the Swedenborgians in the eighteenth century. The book also challenges strongly received opinions on the relationship of Behmenism to the English radical tradition.

Anthony Fletcher was Professor of History, University of Essex.

Diarmaid MacCulloch is one of the leading historians of Tudor England and is Professor of Church History in the Theology Faculty at the University of Oxford. He has written widely in the past, including the books 'Thomas Cranmer: A Life' (Yale University Press) and 'Tudor Church Militant: Edward VI and the Protestant Reformation' (Penguin). He is currently writing a major survey of the European Reformation for Penguin.

Guy is a historian whose expertise is in Medieval and Tudor history and is a renowned authority on castles.

John Morrill has been Professor of British and Irish History at the University of Cambridge since 1998. He has also been a Fellow since 1975 and Vice master since 1994 of Selwyn College, Cambridge. His publications include The Nature of the English Revolution (1994), The British Problem 1534-1707
(1996), The Oxford Illustrated History of Tudor and Stuart Britain (1996), and Revolt in the Provinces (1998). He is also General Editor of The History of Britain, Ireland and the British Overseas on CD-ROM.

Very dull & conventional, but even so, it rightly sees Thatcher as a disaster

Roderick Floud is Vice-Chancellor of London Metropolitan University, and Paul Johnson is Professor of Economic History at the London School of Economics, so it is no surprise that this is a very safe book. There are 14 contributors from Britain and one each from Canada, Japan and the USA.

The first chapter is on the wartime economy. Each of the other 14 looks at an aspect of the economy from 1945 to 2000 - growth, manufacturing, state ownership of industry, education, monetary policy, financial services, economic policy, living standards, services, the EU's impact, technology, regional policy, fiscal policy and industrial relations.

It is clear, even from this conventional set of readings, how destructive Thatcherism has been. Between 1949 and 1973, the economy grew by 3% a year; between 1973 and 2000, by only 2.3% a year. Britain has had the biggest deindustrialisation of any advanced industrial nation, because the ruling class has refused to invest in manufacturing. Thatcher's liberalisation of finance capital forced firms to maximise their financial returns at the expense of industrial investment.

Thatcher cut government R&D, supposedly to boost private R&D and investment, but actually to cut them both. Britain has for decades underinvested in education and training. By contrast, Germany has comprehensive post-16 vocational training and extended its industrial apprenticeship system into services. Thatcher embraced the EU in order to promote the free market, and the EU duly gave us low growth and high unemployment. Her attack on trade unions caused income inequalities to grow: the richest 1%'s share of total income went from 5% in 1980 to 10% in 1998.

The book ignores what a far more gifted writer noted over a century ago: "increasing concentration of wealth, rapid elimination of small and medium-sized enterprises, progressive limitation of competition, incessant technological progress accompanied by an ever-growing importance of fixed capital, and last but not least the undiminishing amplitude of recurrent business cycles."

This book does not cover the frontier of investment analysis, ie real options (option analysis). In my view, this book remains a DCF study, hence would be suitable only as an introductory text.

About the Author
H. A. Shapiro is the W. H. Collins Vickers Professor of Archaeology and Professor of Classics at The Johns Hopkins University. A Fellow of the Guggenheim Foundation, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, and the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, he is the author of Art and Cult under the Tyrants in Athens, Personifications in Greek Art, Myth into Art: Poet and Painter in Classical Greece, and co-author of Women in the Classical World. He has been a Visiting Professor at Munich University, Princeton University, and the University of Cape Town.

Solid, but by no means a companion

Like most Cambridge Companions, or most Cambridge Histories of late, this is really a glorified conference volume that contains a number of essays by different authors on Archaic Greece. Reading this one can get a good semse of some strains in modern scholarship, and a nice overview on such subjects as the politics of poetry and temple dedications and a rather good essay on presocratic philosophy. The topics are unevenly handled due to the format, politics, poetry and history of philosophy are quite good, colonization and visual arts not quite as much.

I really couldn't recommend this to anyone who is not already familiar with the subject matter, but as a one time classics major who has always been shaky on the archaic period it was an interesting and thought provoking read.

About the Author
Mark S. Joshi is a Professor in the Centre for Actuarial Studies at the University of Melbourne. He has wide experience of teaching courses in financial mathematics and has previously held posts at the University of Cambridge and at Royal Bank of Scotland Group Risk Management. In February 2004 he was appointed Head of Quantitative Research Centre (QUARC) at RBS. He is the author of six books and numerous papers on both financial and pure mathematics, and has been an invited speaker at many international conferences.

Great Introduction, should be supplemented

I am writing this review from the perspective of a physicist (w/ Ph.D.) looking to start a career in finance. Currently, I have spent about a month studying the book, and can say that I have a good grasp of the first half.

Overall, I feel that this is a very good introduction to the field of mathematical finance. The canonical suggestion for people of my background is to start with Hull's book (Options, Futures & Other Derivatives with Derivagem CD Value Package (includes Student Solutions Manual for Options, Futuresd Other Derivatives) (7th Edition)). I disagree---not only is that book too expensive, if you have an advanced degree I feel that you should start with a more advanced textbook. I feel that this book is written at an advanced undergrad/intro grad level text, and should keep the reader interested. Moreover, Joshi does a very good job of explaining things from many different angles, which is very helpful if you're just learning the field. The problems tend to be easy, and you can work through this book in two or three months without much effort, except in Chapters 6 and 8 (see below).

There are a dozen or so longer computer projects in the back, and Joshi recommends his readers complete all of the projects before starting to look for a quant job. I think this is probably a good idea, and one should supplement their C++ coding with Joshi's other book (C++ Design Patterns and Derivatives Pricing (Mathematics, Finance and Risk)). Before attempting either the projects or Mark's other book, you should be familiar with classes and inheritance and all the associated goodies (virtual functions, etc.). This will allow you to get the most out of both of Joshi's books.

Another wonderful resource associated with this book is Mark's discussion forum (see the Preface), where he answers questions personally (or, perhaps, has a graduate student to do his dirty work). Either way, this is an invaluable tool for self study, as Joshi (or his ward) answer questions there regularly, and I've never had to wait more than a day or two for a response.

That being said, I do find the writing style to be too prosaic at times. For me, I feel that the author belabors some points while leaving others unaddressed. Other notational/stylistic issues really bugged me---for example, the author has a habit of writing expressions instead of equations (i.e. writing just the right hand side of an equation). This drove me nuts, as it diminishes the value of the text as a reference because you can't scan through to find an equation. (If you think I'm crazy for mentioning this, I warned you!) I also felt that Chapters 6 and 8 took a lot of work and seemed needlessly complicated, though this may represent my own shortcomings as opposed to the author's. I felt as if I was thrown into the pool, so to speak, in Chapter 6, which didn't provide enough background for understanding what is going on in Chapter 8. Readers who have a solid background in real analysis and probability theory will probably fare better. Chapter 6 is rife with typos, so careful reader should keep the errata from Joshi's website close at hand.

In summary, this book is a cross between a formal mathematical introduction to the subject, and a primer on practical application, tending more towards the former than the latter. It distinguishes itself from other purely mathematical introductions in its style: instead of the ``theorem-proof-corollary-proof-useless example'' format of a math book, Joshi thoughtfully examines the important concepts from complementary angles. And while I feel that it is a very good introduction to the field, you simply cannot learn all there is to learn about the field from one introductory textbook, so I suggest that interested readers supplement their study with a more qualitative/less math-y reference (I'm reading Tim Crack's Basic Black-Scholes: Option Pricing and Trading) and a textbook which focuses more on the mathematical tools (I particularly like Baxter and Rennie's Financial Calculus : An Introduction to Derivative Pricing). By combining this textbook with a few other references, and taking Joshi's Table of Contents as the syllabus, I feel that the interested reader should be able to develop a very full understanding of the rudiments of this interesting field.

Many books on mathematical finance give the outright formulas used to price a derivative without putting a lot of focus on the reasons and understanding. This book is the exception. Mark Joshi gives the perfect introduction into the underlying intuition used to price a derivative. As a student I found myself asking certain questions such as "why would I bother with the PDE approach when I have the martingale approach?" and etc. This is what makes Mark's book special as he preemptively asks and answers these questions as you read. However he doesn't lose sight of translating these ideas into real world applications.

If you are a beginner looking to gain a solid foundation in mathematical finance this book would be a good start.

Not exactly for a beginner

I had a hard time understanding this book's explanations of financial concepts. Some things are just not crystal clear. I would learn some of this first from a book that has a more cut-and-dried 'textbook' approach like Hull and then read this. Aside from this I think it looks like a solid work worth reading and studying. ...But again, not as the first pick for the absolute beginner. What I do like is that it is heavier on the mathematical "meat" than a book like Hull.

However, some consultations are unsatisfactory and result in failure to improve health outcomes and dissatisfaction on the part of patients, carers or clinicians. When consultations fail to achieve the desired results, the cause is not usually a failure of evidence-based practice. Today's clinicians are trained in evidence-based medicine, educated, updated and appraised. The most likely reason why things go wrong is a failure of values-based practice - not ascertaining the relevant values perspectives and acting on them in a coherent and purposeful manner. If you rehearse and practise the elements of values-based practice detailed in this book, you will find your consultations more personally rewarding and your patients are likely to derive more benefit.

About the Author
K. W. M. (Bill) Fulford is Emeritus Professor of Philosophy and Mental Health in the University of Warwick Medical School, Fellow of St Cross College and Member of the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Oxford. Between 2005 and 2011 he was Special Advisor for Values-based Practice to the Department of Health.

Edward Peile is Emeritus Professor of Medical Education in the University of Warwick Medical School. A Fellow of three medical Royal Colleges, he was awarded the President's Medal of the Academy of Medical Educators in 2009 for his lifetime contribution to medical education.

Heidi Carroll is a General Practitioner in Aberdeenshire, UK.

It is quite a pleasure to learn something new through interesting stories. I don't know if these stories are real but they really make learning a lot more easier for me.
