About the Author
R. E. Lubow was born in the Bronx, New York. He completed his BA at University Heights College of New York University, MS at Washington State University, and PhD at Cornell University. After several years at General Electric in Ithaca, N.Y, where he established their Bionic unit, he received a Career Development Award from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and moved to North Carolina State University where he continued a basic research program that he had begun as a graduate student with his discovery of the latent inhibition effect. Since 1971, he has been at Tel Aviv University in Israel. His research and theoretical interests focus on normal attentional processes in animal and human learning, and on their disruption as a result of psychopathology, particularly in schizophrenia. He has been the recipient of numerous research grants, and has published over 100 articles and chapters and two books. He is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association and the Association for Psychological Science.

Ina Weiner was born in Russia, and at an early age moved with her family to Canada. She completed her BA at York University in Toronto, and soon after immigrated to Israel, where she received her MA and PhD from Tel Aviv University. She has held major grants from a variety of organizations, including the United States-Israel Binational Science Foundation and the Scottish Rite Schizophrenia Research Program. She is one of the leading researchers in the study of the pharmacological and neurophysiological basis of latent inhibition, and in particular its implications for the understanding and treatment of schizophrenia.

Should be improved.

The authors attempted to combine introductory material in C++, numerical methods and parallel computing. That is quite a brave endevaour. They certainly break the new ground writing an introductory material for a "simulation scientist", but I believe they have achieved mixed success.

On the one hand, the material they present on all subjects is really top quality, packed with 100% usefull information. Bibliography is also very good and usefull. But the organisation of the book is quite confusing. They introduce all the topics toogether - throughtout the book. Hence each chapter introduces some numerical algorithms, few new concepts in C++ and eventually MPI. I beleive a novice would experience serious difficulties following it. For example, authors introduce objects before introducing curly braces "{}" as scope delimiters and before semicolon ";" as statement delimiters.

Further, very soon after introducung the very basic concepts in C++, the authors move on to BLAS. BLAS is usefull, of course, but a novice in C++ may wonder why does he needs libraries written in Fortran, if C++ is a language of the choice for numerical computations. (At least it is claimed so by the authors).

Another confusing example is the one of memory memory access. In section 2.2.6 Memory Management, (pg. 41) the authors introduce basic concepts of memory management and how can loop constructs influence the efficiency of the code. Very usefull indeed, no question about it. But very soon bellow, in section 2.2.8 Exploiting the Structure of the Sparse Matrices, they come up with the claim (pg. 58): "... optimization-savy individuals, as the old saying goes, often miss the forest for the threes" :-( Hence, a novice reader might think: "Well, why do I need to worry about the memory management explained just 17 pages above?".

My most serious critic of this book by far (and I hope the authors will read this) are the contents pages. The contents list only chapters and first level sub-chapters. Secind level chapters are not present!!! That makes the book very hard to use as a reference material. That is really a pitty, since there is some good material in it which is hard to find and might stay hidden. (For example, the chapter I mentioned above: 2.2.6 Memory management is NOT in the contents, so I had to browse slowly throught the book to find it and refer it here). I suggest the authors introduce: "Contents at a glance" (the present one) and a "Detailed Contents", where one could find references to all the chapters in the book. The contents is THE reason why I gave this book 3 stars instead of 4. One it lost on the confusing organisation of the book.

I think the authors should have organised the book in four parts: 1 - Numerical algorithms, 2 - C++ and 3 - Parallel computing with MPI, 4 - Advanced topics. Part 1 could introduce numerical algorithms and have pointers to their implementations in Part 2 and corresponding parallel implementations in Part 3. Part 2 and 3 could have started with introductions, which a reader already familiar with those subjects, could skip. Part 4, could bring advanced topics, such as optimisation, BLAS, etc.

Bottom line, it is:

- brave and usefull endevaour,

- full of excellent material,

- organized confusingly,

- and has a very poor contents.

Buy it if you are simulation scientist or teacher, but prepare to struggle with its organisation and contents.

We are facing new and challenging problems in the areas of data mining, bio-informatics, CFD and so on that require very large computational capacity. The availability of commodity hardware components like motherboards and memory chips, together with free software like Linux, the GNU compilers, and the Message-Passing Interface (in which message-passing is used to control the flow of the computation) have put massively parallel machines such as Beowulf clusters within the reach of medium-sized companies and academic departments. As parallel computing continues to merge into the mainstream of computing, it is becoming important for students and professionals to understand the application and analysis of algorithmic paradigms to both the (traditional) sequential model of computing and to various parallel models.

“Parallel Scientific Computing in C++ and MPI”, written by George Em Karniadakis and Robert M. Kirby II, is a valiant effort to introduce the student in a unified manner to parallel scientific computing. This textbook offers the student with no previous background in computing three books in one. There is a textbook on the analysis of algorithms, a textbook on parallel programming using MPI 1.x , and finally there is also an elementary book on programming using a subset of the C++ as a better “C”.

Karniadakis is a Professor of Applied Mathematics at Brown University, working on simulations of turbulence in complex geometries. Kirby is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at the University of Utah specializing in large-scale scientific computing. This textbook is largely based on the Karniadakis’s courses at Brown University and at MIT over the past 15 years and is thus slanted towards computational fluid dynamics. It is very strong as a traditional algorithms-based textbook for an introductory course of numerical analysis at the late undergraduate or early graduate level. It examines such core topics as dense and sparse matrix computations, linear systems, finite differences, and FFT. It assumes a solid technical background including calculus, linear algebra, and differential equations.

The initial chapters explain how and why parallel computing began, present an overview of parallel architectures, and introduce MPI 1.x. The authors follow this by discussing the powerful divide-and-conquer paradigm and develop the basics of each topic such as root finding and approximation with sequential and MPI-specific implementation details and a lot of useful (but not optimal) C++ code. Chapters 3, 5, and 6 are the heart of the book where approximation of functions, explicit & implicit discretization, and MPI are discussed in detail. The authors are very careful in establishing the foundation of each algorithm and a great deal of care is taken in explaining and estimating the accuracy of each numerical technique, its stability, and its convergence with benchmarks. Each chapter also includes advice on common programming pitfalls, gotchas and exercises. There are, in fact, 162 homework problems throughout the book.

The authors state (on page 4): “Our book treats numerics, parallelism, and programming equally and simultaneously….”. The authors do not achieve their stated purpose of treating these topic equally in their treatment of C++ and MPI 1.x. Those looking for examples of how encapsulation, inheritance, exception handling, templates, and polymorphism can be used to control the complexity of developing, debugging, maintaining, and tuning parallel software using MPI will not find it in this book. For a more thorough discussion of MPI 1.x from a software development point of view using “C”, one might consult “Parallel Programming with MPI”, Morgan Kaufmann Publishers, Inc., (1997). However, neither text treats MPI 2.0 features such as multithreading or C++ bindings for MPI.

In spite of falling short of its ambitious goals, this is still a useful textbook for those who would like to know how to write parallel programs using MPI also wish to go beyond such cook-book texts as “Numerical Recipes”, Cambridge University Press; (1986).

Great book to get acquainted with numerical analysis

This book is great in describing some of the most important concepts and algorithms needed for the beginning numerical analyst. The book claims that it can be picked up by a complete novice and teach C++, MPI, and scientfic computing. I would say that the math goes very quickly and not quite as rigorous as necessary for the typical novice. The C++ is pretty basic but still the book leaves the reader a sense of confusion. This is largely because the book treats a large amount of the library functions as black boxes. The MPI starts very basic and gradually introduces the major concepts.

My recommendation for anyone reading the book is to supplement it with a good linear algebra book (such as Demmel) and book on C++ (The C++ programming language). For further study on MPI, Using MPI would be a good supplement. That way whenever you have a concept that isn't fully described, you have a source to get it from.

The book gets a high rating for going over the right content and doing so in a applied manner that gives the reader the skills to become a numerical analyst.

In particular, the perturbative method introduced leads, among applications, to a simple derivation of the epsilon expansion in which all the actual calculations (at least to lowest order) reduce to simple counting, avoiding the need for Feynman diagrams.

John Cardy is Senior Research Fellow at All Souls College, Oxford, and Professor of Physics at University of Oxford.

Good but needs and equal amount of preparation

This book deals with a most interesting and dynamical area of modern research in physics.
In the frontmatters, Cardy explains that, too often, in the past, students who were willing to go into research in condensed matter as quickly as possible, found a difficult time struggling and mastering techniques that were initially devised for particule physics.
K. Wilson built an arch between these two sub-fields of physics, through his Nobel-prize-worth insights.
However, as Cardy rightly points out, renormalization group methods can be more efficiently explained, learnt and applied by condensed matter, in a Feynman-diagram inspired presentation of the perturbative renormalization group. This subject then reduce to relatively simple combinatorics.
This is one of this book main contribution.
After explaining carefully scaling concepts and the various corresponding laws of critical phenomena, as well as field theory and Landau-Ginzburg theory, Cardy goes on to explain those from renormalization group methods.
The usual (exactly solved) statistical models appear at various parts of the book.
Welcome additions to the literature are chapters on random systems (those with impureties), polymer physics and critical dynamics.
A final chapter offers a primer on how conformal symmetry pops out at the critical point. This is a most active subject of current research in the field.
I should stress however that this book is meant for advanced students.
The typical student would have a background in phase transitions and statistical physics, as well as prior acquaintance with basic (quantum)field theory.
This book would probably be more profitably read with a more experienced student or a teacher at hand, for it is written in a rather condensed form and due to the vastness of the subject can hardly give an overview of it.

Excellent Introduction to Renormalization and Scaling

I am a graduate student in condensed matter physics and I found this book to be an excellent introduction to the tools associated with the renormalization group idea. This book has a number of useful examples that are worked out in a fairly simple and straightforward way. In order to establish scaling relations this book uses some unit analysis on a hamiltonian density and builds from there.
The one downside is that this book focuses on lowest order perturbation and doesn't go into depth on diagrammatic approaches to renormalization ideas. Aside from this it is a great reference and many of my colleagues swear by it.

Fascinating!

As a father, grandfather, and former pediatrician, I have observed many children acquire a language. However, only recently did I become deeply curious about this mysterious process. This book proved to be exactly what I needed. The presentation is orderly, well-written, and very readable. The process of language acquisition is analysed and described clearly. The clever methods of researchers in this field are made understandable and fascinating. The mysteries remaining to be explained are presented frankly. This is a book that both parents and professionals can read for both pleasure and enlightenment.

Very good summary of current knowledge, clearly presented

This book, written by a linguist at the University of Hawaii, is a good introduction to current academic thinking on children's first-language acquisition. It is not intended as a guide for parents, per se, but is usable for parents interested in this aspect of their children's development (there are occasional interjections to the effect "not to worry"). It's written in a very clear style with a very logical arrangement, without jargon drawn from linguistics. The discussion is limited almost entirely to an English monolingual environment, and does not go beyond early childhood and the acquisition of the local basic grammar and vocabulary.

The author starts by examining how children learn the meaning of words in isolation and how sentence structure and other elements of grammar appear to be acquired. Only in the second part does he explore phonology; with good grounds for the general reader, as this involves considerably greater abstraction. Thereupon some sociolinguistics appear, in the context of differing parental behaviors. Finally, the author discusses abstract models of human language as they bear on language learning; is the language learning facility a separate brain function, unto itself, or is it just an extension of other parts of human mental equipment? All of this is discussed in the clearest and most concrete terms.

Brief appendices include the International Phonetic Alphabet as it is used in the book and some tips for keeping diary-style records of a child's languistic behavior and progression. In this context I might mention that the single "how to/how not to" element occurs in the author's discussion of "re-casting"; does adult repetion of children's statements, in standard grammatical format, correcting deviations from local norms, help children acquire these norms? The answer appears to be "no".

A minor quibble: when referring to children by pronouns, the author randomly switches between "he" and "she" when sex is not at issue. When parents are referred to, the author inevitably uses the word "mother", in which case sex could conceivably be an issue in terms of linguistic usage or other behaviors. It would have been clearer in my opinion if the author had followed what is current colloquial English usage and said "they, them" etc. If parents are meant, say "parents". But this sort of thing is common in writing in academia, even when the audience consists of non-academics, as in this case.

The chapters examine the responsibilities, commitments, strategies and institutions necessary for collective security to function both in practice and as a normative ideal in international law and relations between state and non-state actors alike.
