Probably the best introduction out there, but far from perfect

Understanding Minimalism will not be useful to those who have not had a thorough introduction to Chomskyan syntax. Ideally, you should feel quite comfortable with Government and Binding Theory. Even there, this book takes a lot for granted. For instance, the chapter on "Movement and Minimality Effects" takes multiple specs for granted without having explained or argued for them in any detail. (IINM, Chomsky 1995 spends quite a lot of pages on this issue, which is very important.) The authors also vacillate between single and multiple VP-shell structures for no apparent reason, which only serves to make complicated material more confusing.
Nevertheless, especially for those who have had at least a taste of the MP before, this book is fairly clear and doesn't bore you with remedial topics like some others do. In fact, I would argue that this book is at its best as a review or refresher. It would be great to read the week before your orals.
I can't compare this to all the other minimalist textbooks out there, but I would be surprised if this isn't one of the best, for those already fairly advanced.

This book is thorough in covering Minimalism. I recommend it to those who have had a complete Introduction to Syntax. The book lacks detailed illustrations that would make it more accessible.

Fascinating reading though a bit old-dated

This book is a truly fascinating reading, and I had great time going thorugh it. There are very difficult to understand stuff there, but it's due to the growing complexity of syntactic theory in the last years, not due to bad writing. The explanations, though could have been a bit more straightforward.
A major flaw of this book is that currently, many of the theories presented in it are regarded as somewhat old by some linguists. Even though, it's a concise introduction to the foundations of minimalist theory.
