Following Mark Johnston's acclaimed illustrated histories of the 7th and 9th Australian Divisions, this is his long-awaited history of the 6th Australian Division: the first such history ever published. The 6th was a household name during World War II. It was the first division raised in the Second Australian Imperial Force, the first division to go overseas and the first to fight. Its success in that fight, in Libya in 1941, indicated that the standard established in the Great War would be continued. General Blamey and nearly every other officer who became wartime army, corps and divisional commanders were once members of the 6th Division. Through photographs and an authoritative text, this book tells their story and the story of the proud, independent and tough troops they commanded.

Informative and interesting divisional history.

This is the third of Johnston's illustrated histories of an AIF division - the 6th, being the first raised and first to fight. As an illustrated history it is not overly detailed on the strategic circumstances or where every battalion was located in the line but it still does an adequate job in this respect. It's focus is to tell the story of the division's various campaigns through photos and it does this in an informative way. There is about a picture per page which still allows considerable text, some of which gives appropriate context and comment on the pictures and the individuals within them. I found this gave a very human face to the 6th, a formation which saw its profile slip from public view considerably - then and now.
Its story is a very interesting one - impressive victories over the Italians in Bardia, Tobruk & Benghazi before disaster in Greece and Crete. Some units also served in Syria before returning to Australia and commitment in Papua in the Kokoda, Sanananda and Wau-Salamaua campaigns. A long (and bizarre) break followed before the division, serving now as a whole again, finished its war in Aitape-Wewak operations. There are some excellent tables detailed the casualties per sub-unit and some informative material on the divisions formation. The battles themselves are adequately covered through the soldiers themselves. There was quite a bit that was new to me (details of Greece - underreported in this country and the involvement in Syria) and I found the material on the later actions against the Japanese very interesting. The difficulties of jungle fighting was very clear and was compounded for many Australian soldiers by the fear of cannibalism. So yes, some of the less savoury aspects of the war are here too.
I enjoyed reading this book. I found the chapters were just the right length to allow me to read through it all a bit at a time. Many of the photos were new to me and I was sometimes moved by the stories revealed about those young men. Recommended.
