another blast at exceptionalism...

Working the Pilgrims and Puritans colonization of America from the angle of their own goals brings into question once again the myth of American exceptionalism. Zakai reasserts the difference between Virginia and Massachusetts Bay but also notes how the Puritans did not all see America as an opportunity to get away from the wrath to come in England.
