A Fascinating Cultural History of Heidegger in America

Written with great wit and deep learning, Woessner discovers Heidegger's presence in many nooks and crannies of American culture. You will find here the expected struggles of professional philosophers with Heidegger's thought, but also how Heidegger has resonated, for instance, in the films of Terrence Malick. You might call this a reception history but such a term seems too confining for what Woessner has managed to pull off. By understanding how Americans have struggled with and appropriated Heidegger, we also gather the various possibilities that this philosopher makes available. And we also glimpse, in the process, perhaps an American propensity to revision his work in ways that are sometimes exciting, sometimes problematic. This is a cultural history of philosophy that dances on the minds of its readers - stay with its beat!

HEIDEGGER WAS NEVER IN AMERICA (THE USA)

Professor Woessner, an advisee of Richard Wolin, continues the tradition of Heidegger bashing that began with Schneeberger, Farias, Faye and Wolin (and others) who are eager to keep Heidegger unavailable to the reader by casting a veil of suspicion about his "politics" over his thought. This is a subtle bash. HEIDEGGER IN AMERICA (North America, not including Canada) is highbrow journalism by this professor of History and Society at CCNY's Center for Worker Education, an outreach of CCNY to adults and an expansion of its market for the sale of "higher ed" degrees to people with jobs and children. Through the telescopic magnifying glass (lens) of "reception theory," the reader is entertained with reports on professional philosophy and philosophers in its waning years in America. The underlying concern for the author is how Heidegger's "antisemitism" went unnoticed by otherwise white American philosophers (J. Glenn Gray, Richard Rorty, William Barrett and others) while Heidegger's Jewish followers (Arendt, Jonas and others, who sustained New York culture and letters after World War II as emigrees of countries from which they had to flee along with Jewish psychoanalysts). In his dissertation ("Being Here" 2006), reworked for publication when he was 34, worker professor Woessner delights us with a cheery entertainment that minimizes the serious work some very great American scholars. This very expensive book $100 (Cambridge UP) is the result of having digested all of philosophy and history by the age of 29 when the dissertation was completed. Alas, this Heidegger was never in America and never will be.
