The author shows that previous historians have been deceived by false sources and that the picture they have given of the emperor, his strange character, his tempestuous relationship with his mother, and his political aims, needs drastic revision.

Out of the shadow

I can't help but wonder whether Joseph would have been known as "the great" if he had been given more time to ease in the reforms he had to rush through when he was finally out of the shadow of his mother. So many great ideas, unfortunately, so little time to make the changes he needed to for the good of the people. He still made an imapct and his soul should be proud of his legacy. I was very interested to read the details of his teenage years and how he matured beyond them. Rich in detail and knowledge of the time and the people in Joseph's life it's as if one has been transported somehow ;)

Great book

I have not finished the book but so far, I love it. Prof. Beales has very impartial mind and he clearly studied many original sources. I only regret this book is not available as Kindle edition - undoubtedly I would have been much further in the book had I have it on my iPad or Kindle!
